Have a group of users using synology NAS and have issues with Indesign files are locked all the time.
Also remember this issue on a windows server network share once - But overall what is the best solution for this kind of solution of using files on network drive ?

Overall, it's not a good idea to work directly on files over the network.
You should work locally and use your NAS as a backup, share point.

Sounds like a permissions problem to me. A properly configured network should work just fine.

Hi @rossoneris,
Thank you for reaching out. This issue with InDesign files being locked on a Synology NAS or other network drives is a common challenge when working across a shared network.
A few suggestions we would like to suggest:
Synology NAS has a file-locking feature that might cause conflicts with InDesign's file-locking mechanism. You can disable this feature via Synology's control panel to see if it resolves the issue.
Ensure that all users have appropriate read/write permissions on the shared folder. Inconsistent permissions can cause files to be locked unexpectedly.
A more reliable workflow for shared files on a network drive is to download the InDesign file to your local drive, work on it, and then upload it back to the shared drive. This will help avoid issues with real-time editing across a network.
Please try these steps and let us know if the issue persists. We’re happy to assist further!
Thanks,
Abhishek Rao

Have been in contact with Synology support and they can confirm that there are NOT any file lock option on their device

Hi @rossoneris,
Thank you for the update! Since Synology support has confirmed there are no file lock options on the device, it would be helpful to get a clearer picture of the issue you're experiencing.
Could you please create a screen recording demonstrating what happens when you try to open the InDesign files? This will help us understand the problem better and provide more targeted assistance.
Looking forward to your response!
Thanks,
Abhishek Rao

InDesign become extremely sensitive to a network latency - lag.
If it happens when opening INDD file - you'll get read-only file.
If it happens later - InDesign might crash or your file might get corrupted.

As @BobLevine has already mentioned, if your network is properly configured and managed you shouldn't have issues using InDesign. How do you think Adobe's largest customers are working?
