InDesign on new Mac Mini

My apologies if this post appears twice but I can find no record of what I believed I posted a few hours ago. I have just migrated everything from an older mac to a mac mini and most applications seem to be working fine although for some reason I had to re-install the Creative Cloud app. Except for InDesign (version 19.5 which worked on the older mac).

When I open a file, all linked photos on the opened spread appear for a second, then they all disappear. “No errors” appears in the normal place at the bottom of the screen, and although all linked files show in the links panel, none indicates an error. Each one can be successfully re-linked individually, but I’m talking of school year-books with hundreds and hundreds of links.

I have tried packaging a file from the old mac and manually copying the whole packaged folder to the mac mini, but it then misbehaves the same way.

I have uninstalled then re-installed InDesign version 19.5, but the problem remains.

Also check that your Adobe apps are in Full Disk access in your Mac's Security & Privacy settings. If not, add them. They SHOULD be added when you do a fresh install; this problem usually affects people with existing installs that they upgraded the OS around, but it's worth checking.

That really doesn't tell us anything - can you elaborate on the model and serial number?

Also is connected with HDMI cable or USB c - or another method?

Some tips here

Can you connect a HDMI cable?
Is the uSBC through a hub or direct?

AFAIK the HDMI will give a better refresh rate (from what I'm reading online)

Might be worth a try.

I've tried with the HDMI cable and that leads nowhere. The USB c connection is direct from mini to screen.

In addition to other suggestions:

Try to export the file as IDML, then open the IDML doc and save as a new InDesign file. Will it make a difference?

Also, try general troubleshooting steps:

I tried the idml suggestion but that led to a file with none of the links showing.

The rebuilding prefs etc link you sent is a bit too complicated for me! Thanks anyway.

Hi @johnh83716193:

I had to re-install the Creative Cloud app. Except for InDesign (version 19.5 which worked on the older mac)...I have uninstalled then re-installed InDesign version 19.5, but the problem remains.

Lots of good ideas from the other Adobe Community Experts but my money is on this being the issue. Migrating Adobe apps from one computer to another is generally not recommended. (A fresh install is.) And when you uninstall/reinstall from the CC Desktop app, you leave stuff behind. My suggestion is to either rebuild preferences from scratch as per @leo.r, or use the Adobe CC Cleaner tool for a complete uninstall and then reinstall from the CC Desktop app.

Rebuild prefs: https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/

Adobe CC Cleaner tool: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

All seems too complicated for an inexperienced user – even the cc cleaner tool is for experienced users!

Magic!!! That seems to have done the trick. I gave InDesign 2024 and Photoshop 2024 full disk access and the InDesign app now appears to be working as normal. So I then thought I should check on my older computer as to which other apps showed as having full disk access. Answer: NONE! So, it seems at this early stage to have solved my problem – thanks heaps! – but I don't know why it's not been necessary on the older computer.

Depends on what OS your old computer was at. Apple upgraded the security levels on more recent OSs (Monterey and up), and this has messed up existing installs (Since you migrated your old apps, that is considered an "existing install"). Conversely, when you do a fresh install, the OS asks for permissions to be set.
