Question

InDesign - Print Booklet to PostScript doesn't work?

Hi there,

I'm using CS4 and have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I noticed that Adobe has moved its Adobe PDF printer from printers list to Save As section now. All fine.

When I used to print a booklet from InDesign to PDF I would select Adobe PDF printer, select the paper size (Defined by driver) and all would be fine.

Now, as Adobe PDF printer is no longer listed as an option (and can't be added as a printer in General Settings/Print&Fax section) I used PostScript printer.

Preview looks ok (two A5 pages, one next to another, making it a landscape A4), but when I check the summary, and check the Setup section, it says Paper Size: A4, Page Orientation: Portrait. Which is wrong. It should be A4 (or Defined by driver) and Landscape orientation.

When I try to edit PostScript Print settings, everything is greyed out.

When I distill a .ps file I then get A4 portrait pages with A4 landscape (2x A5 portrait) artwork on them - part of artwork cut off and empty space on top.

My question therefore is, how do I edit the PostScript setting when printing a booklet? And how to get a proper PDF when printing a booklet?

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks.

Alright guys, I think I figured out how to create booklets through the InDesign > PS > Distiller route without the resulting PDFs getting cut off.

The answer lies in the default page size settings in Distiller.

Just make sure your file fits inside the new page dimensions – I made mine extra large, then just trimmed the resulting PDF in Acrobat.

That helps, thanks. Hopefully Adobe can make this a bit less tedious in a future update.

Page Position: is ALWAYS "Center horizontally"

Sorry u can use A4 size for Paper size

Don't forget to add crops and bleeds you have bleed.

    Later, sorry for the rush!

Thanks for the help, but still no go. No matter what page size I select, the postscript file (and resulting pdf) is still 8.5x11 -- same as document size.

Trying this on a different computer now just to make sure...

On my home but i will check this site again when  I get home.

    FYI:

    Printer: Select "PostScript file"

PPD: Select any Postscript printer Epson etc.

Setup/Paper Size: Choose customer (size of your document)

    Select crops and bleeds according.

Orientation: SHOULD ALWAYS BE PORTRIAT (No exceptions when making a postscript file)

    I hope this helps.

This is truly maddening! Does anyone have a fix for this? I'm trying to print a booklet (tabloid) from a 4-page letter document, and no matter what ppd I choose from the "Print Booklet" --> "Print Settings" window I always get an 8.5 x 11 document.

I'm trying to print to a Postscript Document like I've done thousands of times before and I'm ready to pull my hair out. Is there a workaround for this? Is there a solution to this? This document has to be at the printer tomorrow morning and the thought of staying up all night to re-arrange pages is not making me happy.

I'm on windows, so things are obviously different for me, but I seem to be able to get to page sizes for print to file if I change the PPD from device independent to Adobe PDF.

    Thanks for reply Peter.

Yes, I was able to do that on Mac OS too, before I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard Adobe removed the Adobe PDF printer - "In Snow Leopard, the Acrobat team replaced the functionality of the Adobe PDF printer with an Automator function in the Print dialog called Save as Adobe PDF". More on http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

So, now I can't print the booklet to PDF. And PostScript doesn't work as I can't edit settings.

I'm not sure you understood all of what I was saying, and it may not be relevant.

I can select print to file as a normal printer (which is esentially what I think you are doing). When I do that, the default ppd for the printer is device independent, and I have no ability to change settings. If, however, I change the ppd field to Adobe PDF (and this may be the problem on SL, you no longer have any PDF ppd installed?) I can now set page parameters, but the print operation still saves a postscript file.
