Instability and slower indesign

New Here ,
Feb 11, 2025 Feb 11, 2025

My company has big problems with the speed of indesign. The last version of indesign seems to has big problem with the speed and the stability. This release it is too slow to open a small file, and with the big file...someone want a coffee...and a lunch... And it has a lot of stability problem. I can't open the same file i open 2 month ago. The new Indesign crash when i open a file that the old version open in 2 seconds. I lost 2 weeks of work, i try to reeinstal the software but there is no solution. The new version is slow and instable

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Exactly which version of InDesign are you dealing with?

What version of operating system are you using?

Have you systematically gone thru this complete list of troubleshooting?

Realese 20.1 has this problem, but the R20 has the same problems.
the problem are: 1) instability (indesign crash with no motivation)
2) it is very slow. We note that indesign uses a lot of internet traffic, it seems that indesign connects to 2 external server and download a lot of information. But ours file are in ours internal server. Until indesign finishes this download (10 minutes or more) i can't work on the file...if indesign don't crash during this operation

We need more information - what platform, OS and InDesign versions?

Do you work locally - save and open INDD files from your local drive - or from a local server?

What about linked files?

InDesign 2025 running slow

The Adobe InDesign Product team is reporting (January 7, 2025) that a combination of the "Documents fonts" folder and the "Contextual Task Bar" may be contributing to application slowdown. If either of these is removed or turned off, the speed and performance of InDesign 2025 seems to return to normal.

Running slow on macOS or Windows

Some macOS users suggest turning off Time Machine to see if InDesign runs better and faster. Some macOS users have had to turn off GPU in Preferences to resolve screen display problems and slowdown issues. Some report that InDesign runs better and faster after they delete all traces of PostScript T1 fonts in the operating system, whether macOS or Windows.

InDesign features that slow you down, but you can turn them off:

Live Preflight can be turned off by deselecting the On checkbox.

Preferences > General > Show Home Screen When No Documents Are Open can be turned off.

Preferences > Display Performance > set to Typical renders the images at screen-rez, but sacrifices color management.

Preferences > Interface > Options > Live Screen Drawing can be set to Never and it will draw more quickly.

Preferences > File Handling > Saving InDesign files > Save Preview Images switches can be set to off.

Preferences > Type > Smart Text Reflow could be turned off.

Preferences > Advanced Type > Type Contextual Controls are two text switches that can slow down InDesign.

Pages Panel > panel menu button > Panel Options allows you to deselect Show Thumbnails.

Hyperlinks > panel menu button > and deselect Auto Update URL Status.

Assignment panel: Consider removing completed assignments to lighten the load.

Threaded Textframes: consider flowing and threading text for only a few pages/frames instead of many.

Paragraph styles that are simple can speed up InDesign. Consider leaving out GREP passive formatting styles.

Cross-References will slow down InDesign. Consider saving them for last.

High CPU Usage because of cephtmlengine makes sluggish slow operation

Yesterday Indesign works fast for 1 hour from 15:45 to 16:45, then they return to goes slowly, using the same file of the same book and without changing anything of the configuration of indesign. Our tecnical says that seems Indesign searchs something in 2 servers, it download a lot of information at high speed. Until it has finished to download this information we can't work. And this is the way we work this month. When indesign has a "good day" we work fast, if indesign has a "Slowly day" we wait and lost a lot of time...and so money...
