Issues with Flashing and Unresponsive Dropdown Menus in InDesign for Font and Stroke Selection

When trying to select a font, (and also happens in stroke menu) the dropdown menu flashes on and off and won't let me select it (sometimes when the font dopdown finally works it seems to have a life of its own ...)

I agree with Robert. 

But there could be other reasons. Can you tell us more about your system: Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running. Please tell us (exactly) what InDesign version you're using.

I'm not suggesting any updates - I'm not a Mac user - but Isn't that a bit old?

Big Sur is not too old. Only 3 versions before the current system, Sonoma.

@Lorry16B8 : Did you have any luck restoring your preferences?

Thanks Steve, I did, and it does seem to be okay at this point, I guess time will tell ... its still does this weird thing, where the page just covers with a solid block of colour over my document, which I had hoped would be included in the fix

It is now considered vintage being 10 years old and that is as far as it will update now.

what versions of InDesign and operating system, and have you tried to reset preferences as mentioned above?
