Question

No Proportional Resizing (Was: No propostionally resizing)

I have recently upgraded both macOS (26.1) and InDesign (2026). Something that has always worked before in InDesign — resizing an image proportionally by holding down Shift and dragging — no longer works. The image’s proportions are no longer locked. Is this an InDesign issue, or should I blame MacOS?

I have the same issue, and I am not running Webroot.

Hi @Michael388613619e9d:

Sharing your particular system information like the OP did allows us to help you faster.

  1. What OS?
  2. Which version of InDesign?
  3. Did this just start happening after the update to v21?

In the meantime, restart your computer and then only start InDesign. Do the shortcuts work again?

Now I’m a bit embarrassed. Of course, I should have tried a restart from the beginning — that’s basic. After restarting, it works as it should. Thanks, Barb!

Are you running Webroot on your Mac? Webroot is the most commonly-cited application to interfere with InDesign's modifier keys. There are others, but let's start there. It's so common that they have the fix on their forums: https://answers.webroot.com/Webroot/ukp.aspx?pid=17&app=vw&vw=1&solutionid=1369&t=SecureAnywhere-Mac-Keylogger-protection-issue-disable-secure-keyboard-entry

It was always Cmnd+Shift on Mac to scale proportionally... Only shift is Photoshop.

According to ChatGPT (and many other answers online), only the Shift key is used to resize an image proportionally.

Shift scales the frame, not the content (image); Cmnd+Shift scales both.

Maybe so, but it doesn’t matter in this case. Neither Shift nor Cmd+Shift works to resize proportionally. It doesn’t work on the content or on the frame.

There have been many reports of performance issues using InDesign with Mac OS Tahoe. It is never a good idea to update to the latest Mac OS until several bug fixes and other patches have been released. As far as I can tell Adobe has not "blessed" Tahoe yet as fully compatible with Creative Cloud apps. If it is not possible to roll back your OS to Sequoia then you may have to put up with the issue that you've reported until more bug fixes and upgrades have been released by both Adobe and Apple. Staying up to date with the latest OS has become a thankless task.

I have this issue on Tahoe, but it only is an issue in InDesign 2026. I still have InDesign 2025 installed and it works correctly. So it is an issue with InDesign, not Tahoe.

And have you tried resetting the prefs?
