PDF comments... buggy?

We've started importing PDF comments, and it's vastly better than Notes (which IMO should be removed.)

That said, PDF Comments seem buggy - for example, when the PDF Comments window is closed, the comments are hidden from view...

but reappear a few minutes later, even when the panel remains closed.

Can anything be done to remedy this?

thanks!

It's difficult to know what's going on there - good be a bug - not heard of this one.

Can you share screenshots or more information to your workflow? Some sample documents that show this behaviour?

What OS - what are the specs of the machines (RAM/Processors etc.)

Be happy to try and help - but without much more information it's a bit difficult.

Hi Eugene -

Mac - 13.4.1
4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Radeon Pro 580 8 GB
40 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

========================

Basically.... Comments keep re-appearing, even when the panel is closed (image below). I have other wishes for the feature, such as being able to move the comment bubbles, but that's the main issue for now.

Hi Turner:

Have you updated to 18.4 on your Mac yet? I saw that there is fix for PDF Comments, though I admit to being unclear what a "forceful refresh" is and not convinced this is what you are dealing with. Still, worth a shot.

My personal opinion is that we are on the right track with online reviews, but the feature still has a ways to go to be fully functional.

Hi Barb!
Haven't updated... in the middle of a few projects 😉 but will look into it.
FWIW I also wish more people using Acrobat knew that if you mark something up, you can annotate the markup & don't need to add an extra comment to it.

But I digress.

Continuing to digress...if I had a dollar for everytime a student looked at me at the beginning of an Acrobat class and said "I don't know what you are going to talk about for two days" because they think they already know all the features, I'd be retired by now! 🙂

Hi @turner111 ,

very strange.

Hm. Is the PDF Comments panel free floating when you close it?

Or is it docked with other panels when you close it?

How many minutes does it take to see the PDF comments again?

If that happens can you make them invisible with View > Overprint Preview ?

Hi Uwe!

Yes, the panel is free-floating when I close it.

As far as the markups showing up again, I think it's within a minute or so until they start appearing. If I wait long enough, more and more appear.

Side note: when all notes are resolved, the panel defaults to showing all, so they all become visible again. That's a bug.

I'll try Overprint Preview next time it happens (if I remember 🙂  )

LATEST

Hi @turner111 ,

just tested PDF Comments on my Windows 10 machine with InDesign 2023 version 18.4.0.

Imported the comments, closed the panel and waited that the comments show up; but this did not happen for half an hour.

Consider to trash the InDesign cache to get this issue straight:

[1] Quit InDesign (I assume you are working with InDesign 2023).

[2] Do a backup of the Version 18.0 folder you'll find here:

~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 18.0

( The tilde is your user folder. )

[3] Rename or remove that Version 18.0 folder.

Restart InDesign 2023, InDesign will build a new Version 18.0 folder.
