PDF File export issue - "too much text"

Hey guys,

I am trying to export a file in PDF but I get a message saying that there is too much text on Page 1. The file is saved but when I try to open it Illustrator opens it (even though it is saved as a PDF File) saying the file has to be vectorized as there is too much text. Therefore I am not able to use the PDF as it always opens Illustrator when I click. Does anybody know what's happening ?

As macpawel suggested it is probably a case of having what is called "Overset Text" somewhere on the first page of your document. This means that there are one or more text frames on that page that have more text in them than can be displayed at the frame(s)' current dimensions. To find out which frames look at the lower right corner of each text frame on the page and see if there are one or more frames with a square with a red cross inside as shown in the screen shot. If so, open up the frame(s) until all text is shown and the red square turns into an empty square that is outlined in the same color as the rest of the text frame (the color of the frame is determined by what layer it is on). Once there are no longer any red crosses showing then try making a new pdf.

I will also reiterate the question that Frans asked as to why you are opening the pdf in Illustrator instead of Acrobat?

You can fix the association of the file.

In Mac. Right click on any PDF file > Get info > Scroll down to bottom and choose Open with > Select the application you want to open > Change all

For Windows. Right click > Properties > Opens with > Change > Select the application > Change for all

your file association is set wrong. Right click on your file and choose open with... Then choose Acrobat and check the box for "always use this program"

Alternatively you can open acrobat and then your file but the more substantial fix is to reset your file associations for pdf to Acrobat and not Illustrator.

In addition to this, if the 'open with' and 'always use this program' option doesn't set it to always use the correct app I've seen quite a few people having to uninstall the two conflicting apps. Reinstall the one you want it associated with, in this case Acrobat, make sure the association is correct then reinstall Illustrator.
