Question

Placing a file in the center of a page and/or filling the page without a frame

In need of this for imposition in the print aspects of my job. I can't for the life of me google this, all the results come up as generic how to file place type results. I'm clearly missing some keywords. We use an an indesign imposition script at work, my boss currently does not want to pay for Fiery impose or other "proper" tools.

My use case:

Imposing 3.5x2(3.75x2.25 with bleed) inch business card pdf file into a 3.5x2(3.75x2.25 with bleed) page in indesign. Only two pages but file > placing and dragging or placing them aligning gets a little tedious multiple times a day. As well, placing a 20-40 page 8.5x11 page booklet to be imposed and having to align everything manually, even with align hotkeys, is silly. There must be a better way. An older coworker uses Corel on their personal laptop to impose where you can place > hit enter and your placed file will fill the artboard. I've tried making template files with frames already in so I can place and drop them into the frames but it sometimes takes me longer to navigate folders to open my templates than to create a new file.

Also open to different indesign imposition scripts. I use impositionsoftware.com's currently.

Hi @AVDAdobe , for book imposition you are welcome to try this script which Exports ID files as simple two up impositions for saddle stitch and perfect binding. The folder includes a sample ID file to test.

Well when you click after doing a place, the object is placed at that point. So if you click in the upper left corner of the page, the graphic should fall on the page using that point. Don't forget you can also select several files at once when doing a File > Place. Then you just click, click, click, to drop them in the document. Also, when you do a file place, you can turn on "Show Import Options" which allows you to choose what page box is used to crop the image. This can be a huge time saver if you always want to use the bleed or trim size of a document.

Thank you, I should have mentioned I already do this and use "show important options" but sometimes I mislick, especially in a 40-50+ page booklet. Of course I can undo and re-place but its extra effort when I hope to find a hotkey or plugin/script that can do this

Let me know if you have any other ideas!

Have you tried the "Place Multi Page PDF" script?

Your boss aren't right. Eugene is right.

Wow - you really need to sit down with the boss and explain to him that a one off payment for a task that happens multiple times daily is a good investment. Did he just buy his car and then when it run out of gas did he just not fill it up again?

I've used this before in a similar situation to yours. Finding a cost effective solution .

You can get a fully working free trial - and it's relatively cheap to purchase for a company.

As a person who once had to impose an entire Dictionary in Quark Xpress all those years ago - you really do need to fight your corner and get the right tools to do the job.

Here's one I found but cannot vouch for it

Agreed, it's silly we don't have a proper imposition. The one's we will get eventually is a yearly subscription that works in our rip.

This imposition plugin on indesign is a pleasure to use but just want to streamline my file > place and not having to drag or click the right spot. If there's a script/plugin for placing files in sequential order into x number of pages, that would be great too.

in another line of work with less tools at my disposal, I'd have a template file with business cards on a parent sheet in indesign. The cards were a single INDD template file I just swapped out with the current card job - Just update links. Can scale up slightly and is more straight forward until your key-op gets real impositioning software like Fiery and PRISMA prepare.
