"Duplicate Spreads" Causes Objects to Resize

I have a document using a master page with a three-column text box. When I click "duplicate spread," the new spread has the same objects, but everything that's unlocked has shrunk and moved down on the page. The effect is continuous, so if I duplicate spreads again and again, everything shrinks.

This is a new one to me and not an issue I've encountered in pre-CC 2019 versions of InDesign. Is there a setting that's become default which I've missed?

Hi together,

did some more tests with the available InDesign documents from Tina and usfcadurning.

The issue is clearly the Adjust Layout feature in the individual spread, be it a master spread or a document spread.

My assumption here is that a bug with Adjust Layout that was later fixed with InDesign 14.0.2 or 14.0.3 and that was introduced with 14.0.0 is still visible in the documents opened and saved with version 15.

The bug may be fixed but only in the sense that 14.0.2 or 14.0.3 and above will not create it.

Older documents from 14.0.0 when worked on with later versions still show it.

Fact: Both available test documents were at least one time saved with 14.0.0.130 where two now known and later fixed bugs with Adjust Layout were still there: [1] Turn OFF the Adjust Layout by default in Margins and Columns dialog, [2] Adjust Layout is not triggered when a Master Page which has different margins and/or page size is applied to a document Page breaking existing user workflows.

As a workaround, not a fix, just turn off Adjust Layout in the Margins and Columns dialog for spreads before you duplicate master spreads or duplicate document spreads. From my German InDesign 2020:

What I also tested and did not help:

[1] IDML roundtrip: Export to IDML, open IDML file as document in the same version of InDesign

[2] Doing new master spreads from scratch in the original document.

Hi IDEAS-Training,

turning on or off Adjust Layout in the Margins and Columns dialog should make no difference if you duplicate spreads.

If that happens its clearly a bug. A bug from InDesign version 14.0.0.130.

True enough, but it solved the problem.

I think it had something to do with the based on setting of the TX master, which also had the align setting on. It's master text frame was not aligned to the margins and I think the elements were resizing to the text frame. (I've destroyed the file and don't want to download it again.)

Definitely worth reporting.

Wow this bugged me real time awhile ago and happened again with some old files, and thanks to you I now know why and can work around it. Thanks big time!

Hi usfcadurning,

tested your document as well. In contrast to Tina's document you see the effect on document pages and not on master spreads.

Rob's workaround is also working with your document spreads: Before you duplicate a spread apply Master None. Then the scaling of objects will not happen. This definitely is a bug.

Hi Rob,

yes, I can also see the issue and tested your workaround.

Cannot detect a cause for the behavior…

Tina, did you ever used the Liquid Layout feature with this document?

Did this document ever crash InDesign during its life time from InDesign CC 2019 to the lastest version 15.1.1.103 ?

The document is owned by someone else on my team, so I can't be totally sure, but it is definitely possible that it did crash at some point. Using liquid layout is not part of our team's workflow, I would say it is unlikely that it was ever turned on. Thanks so much for looking into it.

Your E4 master had adjust layout turned on in the file I downloaded. When I turned that off, it duped properly.

Hi Tina,

we need a sample document to provide help.

And a screenshot that is showing what you did.

Thanks,

Here's what is happening. And here's the file.

Thank you!

It has something to do with the based on property—if I sent the Based on Master for A-Master to None it doesn’t happen.

I think we need the document to analyze the cause.

You could add the document to Dropbox and post the link to download it.

No need to package it, no need for placed images or used font files. Just the document file.

Thanks,

Experiencing this as well. Adjust layout, liquid page is off. Any updates?

What do you see when you visit File > Adjust Layout?

See the attached picture here. Nothing jumps out to me? Also if it helps, the margins/font size don't change, but the live objects on the page do get smaller in height/width.
