"Fit frame to content" shortcut not working

Explorer ,
Jun 05, 2019 Jun 05, 2019

I'm trying to fit a text frame to its text content using the keyboard shortcut.

When I type the shortcut (OPT+COMMAND+C), nothing happens. When I do it via the menu (Object > Fitting > Fit Frame to Content), it works. There are no extra line breaks after the text which might prevent this, and my keyboard is functioning perfectly with no dead keys.

Any help much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this applies to you or not but if you have Spectacle installed and running— there's a shortcut on that app that uses Option + Command + C to center the current window. I just disabled that and now I'm able to fit text to frame in inDesign.

Is the keyboard shortcut displayed behind the menu command ?

If not, then there might be a custom shortcut or menu settings active.

Customize menus and keyboard shortcuts in InDesign

If the shortcut is correctly displayed behind the menu command,

then there must be something else going on. Since you're on a Mac, try setting up a new account for your system (in the User and Groups panel of the System Preferences). Try creating a new document in InDesign and see if the shortcut is still not working. If it's working then there might be a user defined shortcut in your user preference for InDesign. Simply zapping that preference in the failing account with the infamous startup keystroke Shift+Option+Command+Control, might be enough to let InDesign behave again. You can delete the extra (testing) account.

If that account also fails, then your installation of InDesign has corrupted.

Remove and re-install the application through the Adobe CC Desktop panel.

You can delete the extra (testing) account again.

Hi Scott,

Have you tried the Opt+Cmd on the other side of your keyboard? And does double-clicking a corner anchor point work?

Hi Scott:

FWIW, it's working on for me on Mojave 10.14.5.

One other variable to throw into the mix in addition to what has already been mentioned is that sometimes other applications interfere with the modifier keys in InDesign. You might try rebooting your computer, only opening InDesign and trying again.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I've tried them all and it is still happening unfortunately, but one thing I have realised upon further investigation – the shortcut Option-Command-C seems to center the active window on-screen. For example, if I move my Indesign window off to the bottom right of my screen, hit the shortcut, it re-centers it on-screen. This may be overriding the Indesign shortcut. I didn't notice it before as I always had my Indesign window at full screen size.

The only problem is, I can't find that shortcut in order to edit or disable it. It doesn't appear to be in System Preferences > Shortcuts. And I'm not getting any answers from a Google search for that shortcut. Any suggestions?

FYI, strange this is happening as it's a new Creative Cloud setup on a new computer. I haven't fiddled with any of the default settings at all.

Thanks.

Hi Scott:

This is a mystery to me. According to https://defkey.com/apple-macos-shortcuts#shortcut-7418 , Option Command C will copy the formatting settings of the selected item to the Clipboard, so no idea why it is centering your window.

I'm on the same OS as stated above and it's working fine. What if you redefine the shortcut to another key command until this gets figured out?

Boom! Thanks a lot Josh, that's done the trick. I didn't have Spectacle, but I did have a similar window control app installed using the same shortcut.

I was having the same issue. Didn't clock to the fact the IND window was centering so I didn't put it together with my recent install of Rectangle. The app I use to go full screen with any window.
Thanks!

@joshric_asgs
I had the same issue for days now and was confusing the crap out of me. I had installed an app called Rectangle recently that had this shortcut as a command to center my active windows and I didn't even think that this would effect my shortcut functionality in ID! Thanks so much for the fix!

I'm on a Mac, and the option/command C shortcut was being used by the "Rectangle" software. I went into the dropdown menu and selected "Ignore Indesign" and now option/command C works to fit my text frame to text. Hope this helps someone!
