Recovery Message: Do you want to start automatic recovery? Unable to open old documents in InDesign.

I get the loading screen then a pop up asking if I want to restore my previous document.

I have tried clicking all three options, the pop up goes and nothing happens, regardless of the one I choose.

Have tried opening other files.

Tried reinstalling.

Tried restarting.

Tried renaming files/making copies.

Have tried deleting file preferences.

You'll need to empty the Recovery folder in your user profile (which location depends on your OS). Seems likely the recovery data is corrupt, but you might want to move it to a new location rather than outright delete it just in case.

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Steve Werner and @Peter Spier worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details along with the ones asked by @Steve Werner

  • From where are you opening the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening?
  • Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Did you use the CC Cleaner tool to uninstall the InDesign?
  • Share a sample document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.

I will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

We need more information: Please tell us (exactly) what InDesign version you're using. Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running.

You haven't clearly said whether this is happening only with one file or with all files.

You said you "deleted file preferences" but didn't clearly say whether you're restored INDESIGN PREFERENCES:

Here instructions for that:
