Soft returns are generating empty containers in accessible PDFs

Hello

Newcomer to the forum and relative newcomer to PDF accessibility.

I am finding that soft returns in my InDesign document are generating empty tag containers in the resulting PDF. These containers are then separating what is essentially the same paragraph of text into separate containers.

The soft returns are necessary in the design itself so I can't really substitute them.

Is there a way to prevent these automatically being added as it isn't really feasible to remove them at PDF stage?

Thanks

Yes, you see the Span and an 'empty' text. Do not worry, they do no harm and everything in the main P-tag is considered one paragraph. It will be read oke. Empty tags should be removed, yes, but this is not an empty tag, the rest is inside the Span, inside the P.  It is, so to say, an 'empty text' (for lack of a better word). Just let them be 😉. A soft return is only bringing it visible to another line, but is still one <P> paragraph and will be read as such.

You may want to check out this book:

https://www.pubcom.com/books/bevi_508-indesign/508indesign.shtml

It's the only book I know of that covers InDesign PDFs and accessibility.

Thanks David, that's very helpful. I recognise her name from another thread on here, she's offered good advice so will check it out

I disagree. You must avoid soft returns. It is always possible. There is never a reason to use empty lines.

You can subtitue them with correct paragraph styles with space before and after.

Soft returns in ID should require a complex key combination. 🙂
