Unable to Save or Export files from InDesign 2022 (17.0) on macOS Monterey

Updated to macOS 12.0.1 and InDesign can't save or export files anymore.

What I tried with no success:

  • Delete Cache and Prefrences in the Library folder
  • Uninstall / Install InDesign
  • Rebooted the system
  • Logged out and in from my Adobe Account
  • Tried to use the Intel and M1 verison of InDesign. Same problems

So, clicking (or using the shortcuts) Save or Export, nothing happens. When I try to place another document the attatched, broken dialog appears.

Hi All,

We are sorry to hear about your experiences. It seems Apple has fixed this issue. Please update to macOS Monterey v12.1 that Apple released around mid-December. Let us know if you are still facing this issue after updating. We'll be happy to look into it.

Thanks & Regards,

I'm pretty sure it is a resolution thing.

I have no problems at all when my mac is connected to my 1440p monitor.

When I'm at work and connected to a 1080p, the save dialog doesn't show up.

Solution: With no display connected opened, indesign, bring up the save-as dialog and resize it smaller. Quit. Connect montior, open indesign, open save-as dialog, works no problem....

The save-as dialog is just too big for the screen and not rendering.

Just adding, it's not just adobe it happens with Word also... So is a MacOS problem not application specific.

Hello, can anyone help?

I use a Macbook Pro 16" (fully up to date) and use a secondary screen - have done for 2 years now.

While I was using InDesign last week, all of a sudden I was unable to save or export anything from InDesign. The problem soon became clear that it was happening after being plugged into the secondary monitor as when I unplugged it, it worked again.

I wondered if it was the monitor or the connecting cable itself, but I have tried connecting other screens we have in the office (same model & cable, but using a different cable each time) and the issue occurs.

I'm currently in a battle to try and resolve this with customer service and I'm getting absolutely nowhere. They say they'll call and then don't... So I try to resolve via chat/screen sharing and they tell me that's no longer possible.

Hi Lauren,

Sorry to hear about your experience. This issue has been reported by many users on macOS Monterey and product team is working to resolve it as soon as possible.

At this point of time, the only workaround is to disconnect the external display. We'd request you to stay tuned for updates. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Regards,

Ashutosh

I have found a work-around for those experiencing issues, such as not being able to save or export after updating to InDesign 2022 and using an extra or multiple monitors with the aid of a dongle. If you are using another monitor other than the retina display of your Macbook or iMac as your desktop (primary work place) you must reconfigure the Menu Bar in the Arrangement Palette under Displays in the System Preferences.

Go to System Preferences < Displays < Arrangement. The Menu Bar (the little white bar) in the Arrangement Palette must be set to your Macbook Pro or iMac. See the attached pics.

Hopefully this helps someone out there until Adobe has a permanent fix.

Any immediate plans to fix these known issues?

I would love to use my external monitor again. I noticed an update was pushed but this bug was not fixed yet.

Hi there,

We are sorry about the trouble. We are currently investigating this issue. So please upvote this issue here and stay tuned for updates.

As a workaround, you may try one of these options:

  • Change primary monitor from System Preferences (Display) and then restore the settings to the original. Steps are shared here.
  • If that doesn't help,  we would suggest disconnecting the external monitors.

There is an 17.0.1 update rolling out now. May take a few days to get to you.

I opened a document (created in a previous version of Indesign) made some minor changes and cannot seem to save it as a PDF. I get the error 'This document contains links to files/URL(s) that are not accessible. Please check your network connectivity or the original source of content."

When I investigated this particular error,  most of the advice seems to say that you need to enable Folder permissions in System Preferences for InDesign.  However, the only checkbox I see listed under InDesign in the Files and Folders is 'Network Volumes'.

I can create a new document with text/images and save it as a PDF okay.

I tried copying the page contents from the original file into a new doc, but that didn't work.

I can export as a jpg without getting an error, but the jpg is blank.

All status of all the links in my original file is OK.

I have tried exporting to both local folder and cloud.

When I go to close Indesign 2022, the dialogue box that asks to save or discard changes opens but nothing saves even when SAVE ot SAVE AS is selected. Please help! I am having the same issue today after updating to Monterey 12.0.1, just installed the latest version of InDesign as well. Try to save a document, export a document I am able to click but no menu appears. Restart, re-install, etc. etc. nothing. I unplugged from my display as suggested and tried to save, a menu did appear but it was a blank grey box rather than actually allowing me save/export options. YIKES. Any fixes to get back to normal? I see many of you had this problem days ago, so I'm hoping there is a solution by now.

Dear InDesign users,

I have a HUGE problem with the UI of InDesign 2021/2022 on macOS Monterey. It was not possible to open, save, and save-as files:

– When opening, an almost gray dialog window appears (screenshot attached).

– The functions for saving and saving are deactivated.

After a long troubleshooting (recovery mode, repairing access rights, etc.) I was able to find the error. I am using two Screens:

– Mac Book Pro 16 (2021 model)

– External Eizo display

When I use the external display as primary, the problem occurs.

When I flip the settings (Mac Book Pro 16 as primary display) opening and saving files work again.

I need the (large) Eizo display as primary display.

What ca I do? How can I repair the dialog windows?

Interface glitches are often related to corrupted caches. Have you tried deleting the ID Caches folder?

Of course I have tried that. 🙂

After some hours of trying bugfixing, I found this:

https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/macos12-monterey-known-issues.html

This bug is really very annoying. I can only hope that Adobe fixes this as soon as possible. I'm sure there are many professional users who have an external display. The wasted time is very frustrating.

I have tried InDesign 2021 & 2022 on the new Mac Os update and I can't get any documents or images placed. The file window is blank with the excpetion to check boxes? Is anyone having the same problems? I have also seen all the posts with the document font issues as well...

Hello, I´m having just the same problem. I tried opening a InDesign docuement and the work window doesn´t show up, when I right click in the App to Show All Windows this is the only thing that shows.
