Question

When does InDesign automatically find missing links?

Greetings,

I have a drive called "W:\", with a subfolder called "Working" and an InDesign file in "W:\Working", along with some linked image files in the same folder as the INDD file, but then I decided to make a subfolder called "W:\Working\links". With the INDD file closed, I moved the images into the subfolder, thinking I would just have to relink the images, but when I opened the INDD, it automatically found the image links in the subfolder "links". I even tried moving the linked images to the superfolder "W:\", with the INDD file closed, and when I opened up the INDD file, the images were automatically found.

I noticed that if I moved the linked images out of their current place to a sub or superfolder, while the INDD file was open, the links WOULD break, or if I moved the linked images to a completely super folder like "W:\Projects", instead of "W:\Main", the links would also break even if the INDD was closed while moving the images.

What are all the scenerios when InDesign finds missing links automatically? Thanks for some insight into this 🙂

The first two ways you moved the file we're probably the best. The third one moving the links while the InDesign is open. You have to go and double click on the caution ⚠️ icon to reconnect the file. Same as if you mad a change to a link you must double click on the link with the change.

Hope that makes sense.
