Question

Windows Print Dialog gets in the way when printing in InDesign Windows 11 machine

This is a new behavior I have observed with the latest InDesign update. I am running Version 18.0 x64 on Windows 11.

When I hit the Setup button on the Print dialog, instead of going to the printer-driver-specific dialog, I get a generic Windows Print dialog. If I click on the More Settings button on this dialog, I can get to the printer-specific dialog I want, but all the settings in that dialog have reverted to their defaults, and I need to reset them all. The settings revert to default even if I print the document again immediately. Previous versions of InDesign went straight to the printer-specific dialog, and saved the preferred settings there not only from one print to another, but as part of the file when saved and reloaded.

Is there some setting to turn off the call to the Windows generic dialog? Having to reset everything in the printer dialog for every print is time consuming, and a source of errors.

Try following this, I just did it via the Command Prompt method:

https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/restore-legacy-print-dialog-windows-11/

After doing Ctrl + P (Print) in Chrome, and clicking "Print using system dialog..."

I expect my printer's Printing Preference box to pop up like below

But instead I kept getting this and had to go into More settings to get the my Printer's Printing Preference box

So I did the Command Prompt command and now when I do Ctrl + P in Chrome, I go from the first screenshot directly to the second screenshot. This is needed because if I just did print on the 3rd screenshot my printer would hold print jobs until I did form feed because I have multiple letter (8.5x11) in different trays with different weights (so it doesn't know by default if I want to use my default HP letter paper, my shipping labels (also letter), or super heavy letter paper. Hope this helps someone in the future.

It is funny how Adobe is blaming windows 11 for the problem when my Photoshop and Lightroom do not have that problem. I have used the workaround but I still don't get a preview and since I'm printing non-standard sizes I need the preview. It is time for Adobe to stop making excuses and fix the problem. I am paying a monthly subscription to have the latest and greatest software and I think I have a right to expect it to work.

Ive switched my printing-shop-workstation to win11 and exactly this! Its über-annoying, to have that extra-dialog, extra wainting time, and setting up all options – man, this blows!

But I wonder: Why does Acrobats printing behaviour didnt change at all?

I tried a workaround to revert win11s printing dialog via a regedit-command to legacyPrinting, but that did do nothing.

Hello @Jan373823687ed1,

Could you confirm the version of Illustrator installed, and share a small screen recording of the workflow compared to other apps, so I can check this with the team?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @MountainThyme,

Thank you for reaching out. It looks like you're experiencing a similar issue reported here. This is a change brought up by Microsoft on Windows 11 machines. Please try the steps suggested in the post and let us know if that helps.

Thank you, @Robert at ID-Tasker for sharing the workaround. I hope it helps the customers.

Thanks,

Harshika

It doesn't help really. I've been experiencing the same issue since upgrading to Windows 11 last month. I run a printing company, we print strictly digitally and the sizes and designs that we print are SO varied that it is impossible to do any kind of catch-all presets.

Somebody fom Adobe needs to be setting down with somebody from Microsoft and get this fixed.

Just a workaround - as long as you use the same settings all the time - create a copy of your printer and set all your settings - you can even set your own, shorter name.
