Question

Extra space(s) automatically added when typing

I've come across a mysterious issue. When editing text in InDesign CC (2019), spaces are sometimes automatically added. Sometimes it's one space but sometimes more. It doesn't happen all the time, but there's no pattern to it. Usually it happens with numbers. It happens with or without character/paragraph styles attached.

eg.: Editing a price in a text box from "$14.99" to "$13.99" might become "$13 .99"

Is there a hidden setting I've missed? This ONLY happens in InDesign so I don't think it's a MacOS issue.

Thank you!

Can you show a screen capture of a problem line with invisibles showing?

Hi John,

are you doing this with copy, paste?

Then it could be a setting in Preferences that enforces extra blank characters around the pasted text, because InDesign regards the inserted text as a "word" unit and tries to separate the new word from the surrounding text. Though, InDesign shouldn't do that with pasted digits. My tests are showing no issue with pasted digits or chunks like $13 when $14 is selected out of $14.99 with InDesign CC 2019 14.0.3 on Windows 10. Maybe a bug in a previous version?

What you can try:

Turn off:

Preferences > Type > [x] Adjust Spacing Automatically When Cutting and Pasting Words

No, this happens when manually entering text. Sometimes it's one space, while other times it's up to 4 or 5 spaces. I have already checked the Keyboard preferences in the OS to make sure the key repeat settings aren't too aggressive.

I might also try plugging in a different keyboard.

Or resetting preferences/rebuilding cache. I'm on Mojave and haven't experience this issue in any version of InDesign, and I've used them all, including 14.0.3. See https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/.

Thanks! I just reset the cache and will see if that fixes the problem going forward.

Try updating to the lastest version of InDesign 14.03
