Question

Text formatting lost when copying and pasting from one text frame to another

Mac Pro - Mac OS Mojave - InDesign v15.

This is bizzare. When i style up text (size / font / leading etc.) Then copy that text into a separate text box, the text reverts to Basic Paragraph. Even if i create a paragraph style.

I have had my Mac wiped and re-installed InDesign and the problem persists.

The only clue I have to this problem as that it only seems to have happened since upgrading my Mac OS. It was working fine on the previous OS. Our IT dept wont let me revert back and wont let me upgrade to Catalina as it is not compatible (yet) with our firewall software.

My colleague has the same software as indicated above but is on an iMac and doesnt the problem. I also have a Mac laptop and the problem is not on there either.

Any ideas?

Sorry for a dumb question--but it reads as if you created the style after formatting, which is fine--but did you actually apply the style to the text? It does not self-apply when making a new style.

Yes, the paragraph style is applied before copying and pasting. Once pasted into new text frame the para style is no longer attached to the text and it reverts to Basic Paragraph.

Also this isnt confined to a specfic file, it happens to all files, as i said, it's bizarre.

Quick update: The IT guys updated my Mac Pro to the latest OS (Catalina) and the problem persists.

You mentioned that another worker does not have the problem. Have you tried one of your files on another computer?

Assuming it is only your computer and affects all files--new and old--I would try this in order, testing each time:

  1. Reset preferences
  2. Full reset of preferences and caches
  3. Uninstall and reinstall ID
  4. Uninstall, run Adobe CC Cleaner for ID, reinstall

Thanks for the suggestions.

I created a doc and passed it to my colleague. The copy/paste worked fine.

Something else we have noticed. Once I have copied the text, the "Paste without formatting" is greyed out.

As i mentioned earlier the IT guys comletely wiped the Mac and I downloaded InDesign afterwards

so preferences shouldnt need reseting?

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. Is it happening with a specific file? If yes, then try to convert file to IDML and then work on it. Check if that helps.
Let us know how it goes.

Reinstalling does not reset preferences, so try that. Also, how do you select the paragraph? By clicking four times?

Hi Jane, thanks for the reply.

As the Mac was wiped i have assumed the ID preferences are new.

I am using command-A to select the text.
