P: Gen Remove now changes elements outside the painted mask

Explorer ,
Aug 13, 2025 Aug 13, 2025

The update to the Generative Remove AI model in Lightroom Classic 14.5 has ruined it, as it now changes elements outside the painted mask, making it more or less unusable in many situations.

@Aspin26410579htdu: "The tool is now editing far outside the brushed area,"

Adobe employee Sameer K recently wrote above, "The team has identified the issue, but the fix wasn't included in the Lightroom Classic v15 release. It'll arrive soon, as this issue goes beyond Lightroom Classic and also requires broader fixes in Camera Raw."

I just updated to 15.0.1 which says it included "critical bug fixes" but AI removal still isn't working right on my end. Has this update worked for anyone else or are you still having problems?

Adobe is pretty good about updating bug-report threads when a release addresses the bugs. They haven't posted here (yet) that LR 15.0.1 addresses this bug.

Many of us have reverted to 14.4 using Creative Cloud. Uninstall the current version and reinstall the prior working version. Works great!

I like the distraction removal tool, I'm trying to use the "remove people" action to tidy up the background of a shot I took at a recent classic car & motorbike show.

The tool finds the person I'd like to remove, but the mask also selects parts of objects that should not be removed.   I'd like to be able to manually go fix the red selected areas, just like we can when using the select objects mask tool.

At present, when I click "remove" for the selected area the replacement pixels also change parts of the image that really should not be touched - the bike lamps in this example image.  If I could edit the mask I can explicitly exclude that from the AI pixels being replaced.

Unfortunately, you can't do it.  You can select a pin and delete the corresponding red selection entirely, but you can't fine-tune it.

You'll have to use Generative AI Remove and manually select the objects to be removed.

LC 14.4 works great with generative remove and doesn't have any glaring bugs as far as I know.

I have Lightroom Mobile 11.01. I updated IOS as well, in the event something was wrong there but nothing has fixed this...

Over the last two or so weeks, my removal tool on my Lightroom Mobile has been horrible. Anyone else? I updated the app in case that was it, but it hasn’t made a difference. I toggled with “detect objects” and “generative AI,” and this did not help. This was the best removal tool and suddenly overnight, it becomes the worst??? Is this happening for anyone else? What am I missing?

It was two months ago. And the essential tool is still broken. Hilarious! What is the point of introducing new tools when old ones are crippled?..

@Sameer K The issue was reported in mid-August, and we’ve been waiting for a fix ever since. In late October you wrote that a fix would arrive soon, but it’s now December 8th and we are still waiting. I’m fully aware that resolving this kind of issue can take time, but it’s starting to feel like a very long wait. Do you have any updates on the status?

Since updating to Lightroom 9.0.
Rolling back to 8.4 or (14.4 LrC) no longer works for me.
I cant find a version that doesn't create changes to the image outside of the mask.

Any ETA on a fix?
Thanks

@Rikk Flohr: Photography Any update on this? It has been four months now. I'm on 15.6.1 and the issue is still there. The tool is straight up unusable whenever you want to remove anything close to an object.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography This update did not address this very serious issue at all. The problem is just as severe as before. After waiting since August, I have lost confidence in Adobe’s willingness and ability to resolve it.

Hi @Thomas Steen Petersen The update should minimize the changes outside original mask for new spots. For existing retouch spots, you would need to re-genrate the results. Can you re-confirm after checking?
