P: IPTC Metadata Syncing overwritten by sync from Cloud

Contributor ,

Sorry if this is a known Issue, I've tried to find a Bug Report related to Sync Issues and IPTC Metadata being overwritten but...

This issue started with the August release of Lightroom desktop 13.5

What I have found is that if you have a file that is synced to the Cloud and you change the IPTC Metadata in LR Desktop, when the file is re-sync with Creative Cloud. The metadata will be over written by the old Creative Cloud data.

i’m not sure if it’s every field that has been this issue but I do know for sure that:

  • Copy Name
  • Title

Are definitely being over written.

(When sink is enabled on the collection; I will change one of those fields and 5-10 seconds later, The old metadata repopulates the field)

In addition to this issue sink is corrupting some of my Photoshop files.

in recent days, I have found a half a dozen files that have been corrupted by sink when I reopen them in Photoshop I get this error message.

“This file contains file info data which cannot be read and has been ignored”

I know the file was corrupted by sink because I created a new file, then sent it to Creative Cloud, and then reopened it in Photoshop and got the error message above.

Just as an FYI, I am on Intel Mac, and the OS, Lightroom, Photoshop or all up today. - CES

This issue started with the August release of Lightroom desktop 13.5.2

Is that a typo? Current is 13.5

[Note that Adobe's terminology is confusing: "LR Desktop" refers to the desktop client of the LR cloud ecosystem (along with LR Mobile and LR Web), while "LR Classic" refers to the version of LR you're using.]

I'm not able to reproduce this misbehavior. Adobe generally doesn't pay attention to bug reports unless they can reproduce the problem straightforwardly. So I recommend you provide a precise step-by-step recipe for causing the problem, starting with a photo that you freshly import into LR and going from there.

FYI: Adobe’s terminatory re: what the Desktop Client is called changes every few years, so YES it is confusing…

In the attached file you will see exactly what I'm experiencing:

What I’ve done:

  • I deleted my Cloud Library and the Smart Previews.lrdata file, rebuilt it with only the files that I need on a daily basis.
  • I Created a jpg file in Photoshop.
  • Imported into LR
  • I removed all of the Keywords / Metadata that is normally added upon import.
  • Added in a temp title of “xxx” for demonstration
  • Added the file to a sync folder
  • Checked my phone to make sure the file was successfully uploaded to the cloud.
  • Made sure there was no sync activity going on
  • Renamed file

As you can see from the video once the file is re synced the IPTC Title is over written with the original Title.

I was able to reproduce the misbehavior using just LR. But on my system, it happens perhaps half the time and appears to be timing-dependent.  It may be a race condition between Sync and Automatically Write Changes Into XMP (I couldn't get it to happen with the latter turned off).

So as a workaround, try turning off Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.

Here are more precise steps for reproducing on LR 13.5.1 / Mac OS 14.6.1. -- see the attached screen recording. Repeat until the misbehavior occurs:

1. Set the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.

2. Select a .heic photo that has no metadata fields set by the user in the Metadata panel.

3. Export the photo as JPEG, with the export options Add To This Catalog and Metadata: Include All Metadata.

4. Select the newly imported JPEG and in the Metadata panel, set Title to "My Title A".

5. Drag the photo to a synced collection and wait for Sync to finish.

6. Wait another 20 seconds.

7. In the Metadata panel, change Title to "My Title B". Observe that after some seconds, the title changes back to "My Title A" and less than a second later, the Sync starts again.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography: Please consider moving to Bugs. I was able to reproduce the behavior and provide a precise recipe and screen recording.

For those affected on this thread, are you still seeing the issue after updating to 14.0.1?

@Rikk Flohr: Photography: "are you still seeing the issue after updating to 14.0.1?"

I tried the bug recipe four times, and each time LR 14.0.1 behaved correctly.
