P: Nikon Z8 Firmware 2.0 breaks tether in Lightroom

Hallo Zusammen,

Did you found a workaround for you? It is Not really professional for a Tool like Lightroom, that with a professinal camera tethring is not working. And Adobe close the Ticket and ask me if I'm satisfied with the Adobe Support.

I have the same non-tethering issue with LRClassic and my Z8 running latest firmware. The workaround I use is:

1. I open Nikon NX Tether, which finds the Z8 immediately (unlike LRC).

2. I point NX Tether to a specific empty folder on my desktop that I've named (for my client's shoot).

3. I then open LR Classic, and for "set up Auto Import", I again choose that same desktop folder.

4. Then below in LRC's "Move image to..." prompt, I again choose that very same desktop folder.

5. I select that same 'destination' folder in LRC fromn the viewing menu.

6. Now I can shoot using the Z8 shutter button (for people/action), or the NX Tether shutter button (for still life).

NX Tether imports each new image into the folder I pointed it to, and LRC immediately shows that image as it enters this same folder that I have it 'watching'.

I also save the the images to the memory cards in the camera, for redundancy.

(NX Studio which is a real clunker, is never opened.)

Happy Shooting!

2024-05-20 - just out of helpdesk chat with Adobe. Z 8 with firmware 2.01 does not tether with my notebook (Win 11, latest BIOS, firmware, drivers, Win updates). Tested in the studio with the amplified Tether Tools USB 3 cable and nothing. Tested that cable and camera with the beast workstation (Win 10 Pro, latest BIOS, firmware, drivers, Win updates) in the Post Office and it works fine. This workstation has all the Nikon NX software installed - for testing purposes and it works fine in here.

Back to the notebook and replaced the USB 3 (with USB A connector)  by the USB-C..USB-C Tether Tools cable (also 15'). Switching the camera "on" while connected to the notebook via this cable gives the mount tune and the camera lists in Device Manager as portable device with "Z 8" name. Camera off (unmount tune), start LrC, start Tethering, dialogue box pops up searching for camera - nothing, keeps searching. Ad nauseam.

On the noteboaak, I tried to install Nikon NX Tether but that fails to install for some unclear reason. Probaly something to so with not haveing a real Administrator account on a non-Pro Windows machine. The old joke about MS-DOS is an acronym of Maybe Some-Day an Operating System. That was way before 2000.

Now I downloaded a trial version of Capture One Pro. Installed it, connected cable, camera, started the app and tethering. Switched camera on, and - silent shutter - in my mind, bam, bam, bam .. 5 shots tethered into C1. And written to storage.

And at this point I contacted Adobe Helpdesk. The gentleman on the other end was a great contact to communicate with. He told me that his developer colleagues suspect there's an interoprability issue with them in Z 8 firmware 2.01. Shortly an update wold get distributed and that might fix it.

I'll have to patiently wait for Adobe to fix it. Sent them a shot of the notebook running C1 with a frame from the tethered Z 8 in it.

And asked this gentleman to inform his executive management that all pros that do not use ACR/LrC tell the same story: C1 tethers better and is totally robust at that. It opens more vivid raw conversions, but that is merely a profile setting in ACR/LrC.

In the past 5 years or so, every time Adobe presented me a dialogue box asking if I would recommend their app to my friends, my answer was, not as long as I need 3rd party apps to do what your apps should do but doesn't or doesn't do well enough. This is another example of my money not being spent with the proper priorities. Bayer noise, digital artefacts, tethering. These are so fundemental and in the "first get the basics right" category.  The problem with tethering into ACR/LrC is that the tether code as written now, is too finicky. This needs a rewrite from the ground up. Rule nr 1 in sales "prevent irritation" get a fail her, for years.

Now let's hope for the best.

The Nikon Z 8 firmware V 2.x broke tethering with LrC. If tethering is that important to you, you can reinstall Z 8 firmware V 1.x.

Bonjour.

Since my chat with Adobe helpdesk, there have been two updates to Lightroom Classic. One significant the other bug fix. No result so far. I'm also in contact with Nikon, because Nikon NX Tether doesn't want to install on my notebook with preinstalled Windows (a "home" version).

But Nikon have taken weeks of asking the same question and finally understanding the point.  But since then it's silent.

If you can install NX Tether, then use it to get them shots on your computer. You'll have to set Lightroom/Camer Raw up to monitor a watch-folder from where it processes each new addition and goes to the last image time and again.

The Nikon case is likely a bug in the installation script - it works properly on my beast workstation under Windows Pro, but that thing has to remain in the post office. The studio relies on the notebook and a large display.

Considering that C 1 works properly no matter what, this is all extremely disappointing and in both our cases suggests code that is not written in a robust way.

Same here. Nikon Z 8 firmware V 2.x broke tethering with Lightroom Classic. I think it will work if you go back to V 1.x. I don't know if that is possible though. I always keep older version of Nikon firmware, but I don't find a V 1.x in my files.

Moderators, @Rikk Flohr: Photography@Rick Spaulding -, please consider merging with this Bug:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-nikon-z8-firmware-2-0-breaks-tether-in-light...

Though the first post mentions three cameras (Z8, Zf, Z30), the subsequent posts concern the Z8 and the version 2 firmware update.
