Not sure if this is the right place for a bug report, if not could anyone direct me to the right place please.

Clicking develop module at top right from the Library module opens the photo with film strip and both side bars black empty spaces. Initial few times I had to quit and restart Lightroom but then discovered switching to grid view again and develop keyboard short cut, everything comes back.

Hi all,

As Simon and Jeff have already mentioned in this thread, please make sure your macOS is updated to at least macOS Sierra 10.12 and at least Lightroom Classic 7.0 or Lightroom 6.13.

The best combo to avoid this issue is being on macOS High Sierra 10.13 and Lightroom Classic 7.1 or Lightroom 6.13.

The team has worked pretty hard with Apple to get this issue to stop appearing with macOS Sierra 10.12 and macOS High Sierra 10.13. Improvements were made in 10.12 and iterated upon for 10.13.

Hi Steve,

As noted before, this is a bug introduced at the macOS level. Through collaboration with Apple, they have made a fix in the later version of the macOS update. So the right thing to do is to update to the more recent version of macOS when possible.

Having said that, Lr team have done our best to workaround this issue for the cases that we can reproduce for macOS 10.11.6. But there is a limit can Lr can do.

Hope you understand the situation.

This should now work correctly in Lightroom CC2015.10/6.10 or later on macOS Sierra (10.12) or later. Don't hesitate to let us know if you see the issue again on the current macOS, and if you do, what triggers it.  Please update your system and let us know if you have any additional issues.

Additional information on this update can be found here: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2017/04/lightroom-cc-2015-10-now-available.html

I tried to update from 2015.9 to 2015.10 but I get an error message: 5. Closing and starting Creative Cloud App and trying it again doesn't work.

Make sure your Creative Cloud App is up to date: (4.0.1.188).
Restart your computer.
Uninstall Lightroom via the App.
Reinstall Lightroom via the App.

Did that fix it?

The CC App was up to date.  I uninstalled LR and installed it via de CC App. I have now version Adobe Lightroom 1014445, but I got also an error message, that a patch failed with the question to try it again.  I have tried it again, but I still got the error message: 5

I tried it all, but again I get the same error message: 'the installation of LR is completed, but a patch has failed. I got no information about what patch. I get no version name 2015.10, but only CC 2015 [1014445]

On the panel black out issue, I too had the problem but after using "Better Snap Tool" it seems the matter went away.  Not sure I can isolate the improvement to this application but it may hold some clues for a LR fix. Using macOS 10.12.4 iMac 2012 2.7ghz, i5 NVIDIA GeForce GT card

Have you tried clicking the Stop receiving notifications about this problem link at the end of the emails? Or the Unfollow button in the top right corner of this page?

Try update to the latest version of macOS if you can. We still heard reports of the issue occasionally on El Capitan, not so much on Sierra.

not feasible on this machine at this point-early 2008 mac pro tower.  mixed reports on compatibility.  I am also in major edit print mode for a festival in 3 weeks and have 0 time to play with a new system install.  AND this issue has been happening for MANY iterations of both Lightroom and OS X.  El Cap is a very recent version and I would expect Adobe to make it work in that environment too.  Not to nitpick but  "not so much on Sierra" to me translates to still an issue with Lightroom.....  Very open to other thoughts.  It is VERY frustrating constantly (2-5x/ day) having to deal with this.
Thanks

I've had no problems on a 2015 iMac after upgrading to the latest version.  Scott you can't expect them to fully support a 9 year old Mac.

Based on our investigation, the heart of the issue was introduced during the El Capitan updates, regardless of the Lr versions.

Scott: try roll back to lightroom CC 2015.6.  I was really frustrated when I am on El Captain and updated to 2015.7 and it started to happen once in awhile.  Once rolled back I have zero black panel issues.  I am currently considering rolling back again since Adobe has failed to fix the issue in later versions (still).  If there is no crucial feature for you on 2015.7+ just roll back.  it should be really quick and your catalogue will be intact and OS un-changed.

Simon: anecdotally that is untrue for me.  I've stayed on El Captain and never updated to sierra, and had all the patches Apple releases for EC.  I never had an issue until 2015.7 and on.  like I told Scott above, once I roll back to 2015.6 I have zero occurrence of this issue for many many months until I tried these new releases again. I am currently on 2015.9 and it's happening, but more consistent in the behaviour.

I work in IT and it looks like you guys have some serious problem keeping the state and redrawing the panels.  For me it's very consistent on when it will happen on 2015.9
1) you computer wakes from sleep (lid close) or screen auto turn off, and the window is minimized.
1a) if you are on developer module, once you maximize the panel will be gone
1b) if you are on library, when you move to developer
2) Occasionally when lightroom lose focus and you go back to the application.  everything will be normal but when you move module the panel will disappear
3) this one I can reproduce 100% right now.  When you minimize window, the "shrink animation" and the icon will display no side panel (black), but when you do a restore it has no issues.  However, when you change module it'll disappear.  A min/max cycle will bring it back.  This happens wether you start with library or develop.  I haven't figure out what the cause is to change it to this state.

You guys' temporary solution is basically forcing the application to some how reset the state and redraw the panels...

William-thank you for the suggestion.  when I have a sec, I will try that.  I did think there was something recently that was valuable to use ( when I can get it to work) in the last few iterations, but I am not sure what that was at this moment.  Again, thank you.  sp

FYI...I am in  El Capitan 10.11.6
Mac Pro (early 2008), Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB, 14gb Ram

I was using the first beta while it was still having a problem, one day I turned off the LR preference for the graphics processor. Was only using it for a short time that day but having no problems. Then the second beta came out that day so I turned the graphic card back on and updated. Still not having the problem. I assume the new beta fixed and I updated when  2015.10 came out and still have no problem but I see someone with the same old computer is having issues still. Could it be that turning the graphics card off and back on had some effect? Just a thought. Things are working fine for me. When I hide and show LR the panels go black as it comes and goes but once open they have been stable.

Now a new problem- with 2015.10, the side panels stay up, sometimes after a few seconds delay, but now in Develop, the sliders are doing odd things on their own. I will adjust clarity, and suddenly the image will turn gray  since vibrance has gone to the extreme left on its own. It seems to be quite random, as to timing and which sliders are affected, but mostly the sliders in the Basic section. This is on an iMac Sierra 10.12.4.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Gordon,

Your issue seems like it isn't related and from the behavior suggests a problem with your Preferences file.

to reset:

  1. Close Lightroom.
  2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
  3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
  4. Close Lightroom.
  5. Restart Lightroom.
Do things start behaving normally?
