P: Slow UI when using Mac and Custom Display Profile

Explorer ,
Oct 22, 2020 Oct 22, 2020

Hello,

Since upgrading to Lightroom Classic v10.0, all UI-related functionality is painfully slow. All editing functions are working correctly and quickly but scrolling through the catalogue or even scrolling a side panel is taking many long seconds to refresh. Unreasonably long.

Disabling GPU Accellaration has no affect on my Lightroom's performance.

macOS Mojave 10.14.6

Mac Pro (Late 2013)

3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5

32 GB 1866 MHz DDR3

AMD FirePro D700 6 GB

Please go to Help>System Info… and get us the exact installed version number of your software.

If it's 10.0 or 10.1, please review the diagnostic step in this post to see if this is the issue you are facing: https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-mac-user-interface-slow-after-upgrading/5f91bbf7917fbb3a9935742e?commentId=5fa06f1e72a09d24e1c2b700

3 months is more time than the delay between V9.4 (june-august 2020) and V10 (october 2020). This also is a fact.

A fact indeed that has nothing to do with the current bug and fix.

My 6 month old puppy gained 20lbs in three months and that fact too is moot. Must we hear another great void contribution about this Adobe bug fix process of which you have no experience?

Is this a known issue, affecting many people?

Do you think Adobe recognise it as such?

Are they addressing it?

Thanks

Since others with equivalent hardware are not having the problem, the next step is to find out what is different about your configuration:

  • plug-ins for Lightroom and/or macOS
  • monitor profiles / calibration
  • what else is going on such as Lightroom updating previews in the background. When I switched to 1:1 previews, it took Lightroom about 18 hours to complete the work.
  • 3rd party anti-malware
  • syncing to the cloud, since this is a fresh install, this could take quite a while
  • have you checked the performance monitor to see what is consuming resources?
  • if it is Lightroom consuming the CPU then you might just let it run for a few hours and see if the problem goes away. Unfortunately Lightroom can be running heavy CPU tasks in the background but not indicate it in any way.

Does this bug affect all installations of Lightroom on all Macs and versions of MacOS? I haven’t upgraded to 10+ yet but am starting to grow tired of waiting for a fix as there are new features that I have longed for for a very long time. But there’s no point in update if there’s no chance of success. 😉

@stephane_jean Does this bug affect all installations of Lightroom on all Macs and versions of MacOS?

No. It's a rare and complex bug that absolutely doesn't affect everyone, using all OSs or hardware. I have no such issues using a custom profile, make from NEC SpectraView,  on a MacBook Pro (last released prior to M1) on Big Sur.

@stephane_jean I have detail on another post in this thread how you can update to 10.1 and still keep 9.4. That way you can try 10.1 and if the bug effects you then you can continue to use 9.4.

Reading most of the posts it seems to me that LR 10 and 10.1 has a memory leek. That should be addressed.

Check this thread from the Adobe U2U forum about the Big Sur update to 11.2 that seems to fix some issues.  This is just for your information as I have not had issues using a custom display profile.

It's not a simple memory leak. But believe whatever you guys wish and wait on the fix which is coming. That's what matters.

I think it's a MEMORY ONION or maybe memory shallots <g>.

The engineers have checked all kinds of attributes.

According to your diploma and profile on linkedin, you have not a clue in software development. Your role as an alpha tester is to click install and click run.
So it is useless to report here what you hear, not understanding anything.

But it may give you the feeling of being important.

As one of your book buyer says on Amazon, quote:

" Rodney's a bit too 'me me me' very boring after a while"

You're not very good at reading sir. Try again:

"Andrew is a partners of Pixel Genius LLC, a company that has created such products as PhotoKit, Photokit Color and PhotoKit-Sharpener (http://www.pixelgenius.com/index.html)."

Not only did myself and my partners (Bruce Fraser, Martin Evening, Mac Holbert, Jeff Schewe and Seth Resnick) produce three software products that all work within the Photoshop environment, the sharpening routines in LR/ACR (capture and output sharpening) were licensed BY Adobe from Pixel Genius.

Meanwhile, photostudiotnk is some alias for a poster with no profile on linkedin I can find; so much for your transparency here. Here's what you've decided to tell us about yourself here:

@andrew_rodney

Being an expert in color management and a partner of companies that develop software does not show anything about software development knowledge and expertise. If you had a minimum knowledge of real software development, you would have understood what I meant by "One computer needed", compile with debug enable, etc.

Alright chaps, let's leave the personal stuff out and stick to the topic, shall we?

While I think Andrew would admit that he's very good at winding people up 😉 he has a long relationship with Adobe that allows him access to additional information not publicly available, so the information he has been able to share here has come from reliable sources.

Hi Victoria

At some point, after being contempted on nearly every post, you need to know where people talks from.

For sure Andrew is a color management expert, and I respect his knowledge in this domain.

But we were talking about software development, debugging technics and quality assurance, not about color management.

He said he is not an Adobe employee but he have signed a NDA. So he works for free for Adobe, does not get any help from Adobe to get customers for his company, does not get free licences or any other advantage by Adobe.

I follow this thread to know when the issue is solved, as a paying Adobe customer. I discuss about software debugging as it is a domain I know very well.

I am not here to be contempted without any reaction by someone who seems to have a sociopath and egocentric behavior.

Best and kind regards
Thierry

It is a MacOS Apple Issue, not only an Adobe Issue

Same behaviour and solution for other software like "Vuescan"

Changing the Color Profile to sRGB or AppleRGB will help, but that is nocht tolerable for graphics machines...

Well said Thierry.  While I agree with Victoria that we should stick to the topic, its hard not to respond to those who, for whatever reason, seem unable to provide helpful, additive information to this very, very , very , very, very.......long thread.

If you cut the Memory Leeks into small pieces, (called bytes) and add them with eggy-weggs, salt and pepper to a heat sink, you can have a delicious geek breakfast (while waiting for a fix!)
