P: Synchronize folder does not import new images unless show import dialog is active

Community Beginner ,
Oct 05, 2015 Oct 05, 2015

Lightroom CC 2015.2 does not import new images with "Synchronize folder" unless "Show import dialog before importing" is ticked and imported that way. It does show that there are X new images to import, but just gives "No photos or videos were found to import." dialog after pressing "Synchronize". Using Windows 10 and images are on a mapped network drive. This has worked fine with all previous versions dating back to LR 3 or so when I started using it and definitely still with 2015.1.1 yesterday.

what really puzzles me is that adobe has learned nothing from the microsoft "start menu" debacle.

design by committee.....

OK I did my upgrade back to 2015.1.1. It was quick and smooth and I'm happy for the moment. I'll wait for 2015.3 or 2015.4 and then only upgrade after I see a lot of favorable reviews. I've learned not to be one of the first to jump on a new upgrade.

Tanja - I'd add not only design by committee, but design to the lowest common denominator. But you can't idiot-proof everything. The idiots just keep evolving.

i fear that when adobes thinks "we got most of the pros now we go for the noobs" it will all be much much worse in the future.

i tried LR mobile and i honestly have no use for it.
i don ́t use my smartphone to edit on a 4.5 inch screen or upload/manage my pictures.

i do that from my desktop or laptop.

yet adobe seems to focus on developing for the selfie crowd. :(

instead of fixing and improving the mediocre face recognition, the map module, demosaicing or the DAM features.... i get mobile apps and a dumb import dialog.

x-trans sensor support is still utter crap in LR.
the whole demosaicing in LR is falling behind the competition in terms of quality.

sharpening in LR is crap.
it produces ugly artifacts. and i don ́t speak about oversharpening or user faults.

like many pros i set sharpening in LR to ZERO.
because i can ́t stand what LR sharpening does to my images.

i would love to do some RAW pre-sharpening but LR sharpening is just not good.

when you take the time to compare sharpening in LR to other products you will see that this part of LR is in desperate need of improvement.

and that ́s NOT a user fault.
many photographers may not even notice this because they have not seen sharpening results from other products.

that is stuff adobe should focus on.
not on a new import dialog.. what a nonsense..... 😞

The Synchronize Folder dialogue shows the crrect number of pictures to sync, but only pictures sitting in the current folder are synced. Any sub folders are ignored.
The workaround is to tick off Show Import dialogue, and import from there.

I'm also experiencing this problem. LR CC 2015 2.1 is telling me I have 362 pictures to import into a folder but after hitting the Synchronize button it tells me there are no photos or videos to be found.

Nothing new to the readers of this thread but I am another annoyed user and this problem has been there since LR5 for me. I've tried unclicking all the options in the prefs and dialog window with no success so I really don't know what to do and there are 12,000 images in dozens of sub-folders so I can't even find where the missing images are despite going through and syncing each and every sub-folder. Maybe the only solution is export each catalog into a new LR cat and start a fresh?

I hope someone fixes this problem soon.

Added 4 photos to new folder in Explore win 7 4 bit. Synced in Lr. They show in Previous Import, but not in the tree in Lr. They exist and show in Explore.

I have this same problem. Sometimes, when I go back and retry it, it works but then stalls!

I also have this problem with some variations.

Importing say 15 pics from an SD card

Sometimes on the first try it will just say no photos found to import
If I try again it will sometimes do 2 or 3 and then freeze
Sometimes it will just freeze from the start

This seems to have been a problem for months although I have only experienced it for the first time today. After I tried rebooting there was a Lightroom CC update but it didn't make any difference.

It also seems to affect both PCs and Macs!

I then tried copying the pics from the card to a folder then tried importing the folder. This worked! Weird - obviously a problem with cards?

Thanks to other's input, I finally got the work around on this problem, but sheesh, ya think this would have been addressed certainly in Beta testing. I spent half the night hitting my head against the wall on this one. This definitely needs fixed for us Right-brained types who love the program (when it works).

None of these suggestions work at all for me. I click Synchronize folder, the dialog says there are 4000+ images to import, but when I click import it wait for a moment and then says no pictures or videos found.

I'm so pissed that I just spent money to update to the CC version of LR. This is such basic functionality that is broken! If this isn't resolved within a week I'm canceling and using Capture One.

*By the way have the "Show import" box checked doesn't help in any way.

Don't worry, it'll be fixed really soon, I'm sure.

In the meantime, roll back to 6.0. In the CC app, scroll down to 'Find Additional Apps'. The install button next to Lightroom there should give you a drop down to choose an earlier version.

Hello!

Its sort of an import issue which I have as well, though it is not directly around the
import menu.

As I did not like the import before and neither really like the new one I had used
my own sync of files. (rsync script which either places the files in a year/yearmonth/yearmonthday structure, copying everything new from the card and making a backup if there is a change of the file in the same folder.
The storage is either my NAS or a local attached drive if I am using my laptop on the go.
In lightroom I first used the import and selected the directoy I wanted to import, but then I figured its much easier to go to the yearmonth folder in the Folders overview, right click and select syncronize with not showing the import dialog.
With the LR2015CC version it worked like a charm,
standard previews were generated automatically and also my import settings were used.

Now with 2015.2 and 2015.2.1 this synchronization fails. First it works and shows me for example that 5 files were found, but then no were imported.
If I select the additional import dialog these files are found, but that takes way more time to wait for the dialog to show all images.

This also needs to be fixed as it renders the import work-flow I use to useless.

NAS: SynologyDSM5.2U4 using SMB

Are you clicking "Show import dialog before importing" in the Synchronize Folder dialog?

That doesn't actually work for LR, unfortunately. It's easy to roll back to CC 2015.1.1 / 6.1.1 (which is better than 2015.0 / 6.0), but you'll need to follow these instructions: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-...

not a problem with your cards, you probably moved the files to a folder lightroom already knew about and was the last one in the list, thats the only way it will work, regardless of what check boxes you have checked or not... just downgrade back to 6.1.1 and everything works again

Using "Sync Folder" in the Folder panel does not import files in NEW subdirectories. New means the folder is not yet in the panel, just new on disk. When you sync the dialog tells me, that there are new files, but does not import them. When I add the folder with the right name in the panel, it works.

I think this is instance of the more general bug, in which LR does not sync with subfolders unless the option Show Import Dialog is checked.

New installation of Lr cc on a Windows 10 gaming laptop. I have about 475 stereo pairs, the left images in one folder and the right ones in the other. The file names in the 2 folders are the same. Importing either folder (into a new catalog) seems to work; but when I try to import the other, about 40 files are flagged as "already imported".

I have not found a way to force these files to be imported anyhow. When I try to synchronize the catalog folder, Lr first reports the missing files but finally rejects them with the same message. "It appears that this photo has already been imported".

Falling back to Lr 5 until you fix this stupid bug.

You can revert back to CC 2015.1.1 / 6.1.1, the last stable release (with the old Import): http://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-.... That way, you can continue to use your current catalog and won't lose any edits.

Version 6.1.1 has the same bug: Given two directories of almost identical photos (stereo pairs) having the same file names, it claims that some of the photos in the second directory have already been imported and refuses to import them. Whichever directory I import first gets imported correctly.

So this bug is not in the new import dialog but is something more fundamental.

The workaround I am now using is separate catalogs for the left and right
photos.

Somewhere in Adobe's help files I once read that Lightroom does not automatically recognize duplicate photos. But in this case it sure looks as if it is trying to -- and botching the job.

If the files are in separate directories Lr should at least offer the option to import them anyhow,
