P: Unable to relaunch after File>New Catalog/Switching catalogs, or relaunching with certain plugins

Community Beginner ,
Aug 13, 2025 Aug 13, 2025

Hello, I just updated LR Classic from v14.4 to v14.5 on Windows 10.
I’d like to report a major bug:

  • It is impossible to create a new catalog from within the application (Menu > File > New Catalog).
  • It is impossible to switch catalogs (except by clicking directly on the catalog file to open the application).

The window App closes, then nothing happens for several minutes (Task Manager shows a "zombie" Adobe process still running) → I have to kill It to reOpen the app.

I had to reinstall version 14.4 and everything is now working normally again.

I am able to reproduce this on Win 10 and have logged a ticket with the team. Thank you for your report!
The workaround until a fix is implemented is to:

1. Kill the 'zombie' Lightroom instance in Task Manager.

2. Use the [Alt]+[LrC Icon Click] to gain access to the Create New Catalog/Switch Catalog dialogue.

For those Windows users on the thread, try going to File>Plugin Manager and disabling the LogiOptions Plugin. On my system, that cured the issue.  Other posters in the thread have identif

Hi all! The update to Lightroom Classic v14.5.1 is now available and includes a fix for this issue.

If you don’t see the update in your Creative Cloud app, refresh it using Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt + R.

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for the update to show up.

Thanks for your patience.

After the latest update, LR Classic has been buggy...When I go to relaunch Lightroom after it hangs, it never comes to the front on appears on the tool bar (Windows). After double-clicking the program a few times, nothing happened. I then look in Task Manager to discover there are multiple instances of LR open, but none are appearing on screen. I have to right click each instance to exit them directly within Task Manager. Once they're all closed, I can then reopen LR as normal.

Previously, the LR Classic catalog would not allow for multiple instances of LR to be open at the same time, hence classifying this as a bug.

Been using Tourbox Console for about a year now in Lightroom Classic with no isses. Now with the new Lightroom update 14.5 program when running Tourbox, Lightroom will not close on it own. Hangs forever and I have to force close Lightroom. Tourbox works with Lightroom, all shortcuts, etc. so no issues with functionality just hanging on shutdown of Lightroom. I've disabled Tourbox plugin and Lightroom works as normal. Updated and reinstalled Tourbox and Plugin but same thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also using TourBox 5.9.2. I'm glad to know that the reason Lightroom 14.5 couldn't close was due to the TourBox plugin.

Hi, thanks for reaching out!

Please go to the Help menu in Lightroom Classic, then System Info, and copy the text. You can share the info with us by either pasting it as a reply here or in a text file and sharing the file with us. Where are you creating the catalog?

Meanwhile, you can try to reset the preferences of Lightroom using the steps mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/4lypu4c

Thanks,

Hi @neilacc, welcome to the community!

Could you share a few more details about the issue? When you say you can’t quit Lightroom, do you mean the app completely freezes? Does it happen randomly or after using a specific tool? Also, it would be super helpful if you could share your System Info.

You can find it in Lightroom by going to Help > System Info. Just copy the info into a text file and attach it to your reply, or feel free to share it through Google Drive, WeTransfer, or any other file-sharing platform.

Thanks so much!
Alek

Hi @Aleke - The app freezes and I get the spinning beach ball - It happens all the time, not after any specific tool. LR works fine, I can do everything I need to do on it, but I just cant quit and have to force quit each time. I've tried to attach the text file but it says its not supported so i've pasted the info...Thanks for your help.

Hey @neilacc, thanks a bunch for sharing your System Info!

When you get a chance, could you try disabling your plugins one at a time to see if performance improves? Just in case one of them might be causing the issue. Appreciate your help with testing this out!

Following may have nothing to all to do with your problem, however, Notice that you have some plugin duplicates, or more specifically, older versions. The DXO Pure RAW for example. This might not hurt performance, but, your catalog is a database and may not take kindly to clutter. You may want to consider removing the older copy's.

If you’re using the TourBox app, make sure to quit TourBox before closing LrC14.5.
That solved the issue of LrC 14.5 hanging for me.

After updating to the latest version of Lightroom Classic, on quit it stopped responding after saving the backup file. A forced quit is required to end the program. After much troubleshooting, I've narrowed it down to the Tourbox Console Plugin. Updating the plugin doesn't resolve the conflict. Disabling the plugin prevents the hanging quit (after LR is restarted without the plugin enabled). Has anyone else encountered this issue or found a workaround?

Please explain what editing work you have done prior to your decision to quit the application.

Have you selected to backup your Catalog, and have you checked to test integrity and optimize catalog?
I have noticed a delay in the starting of the backup process when I have used the Denoise process.

The process takes a couple of minutes to start and to complete the process, but I have not had to force quit.

Have you received any error messages?

Only slight editing: exposure, clarity, some masking for local adjusments.

No denoise. No error messages.

The problem has been present for a few days. I have optimized the catalogue and done a weekly backup with no problems. It's only when I'm finished, and want to quit the application that it just freezes, and I need to Force Quit.

Any thoughts?
