Could not move file to the destination folder because it is not writable or there is not enough...

Hi there,

Since a few month I always receive the message when I try to import video files (.mov). Lightroom always imports one of the videos files, ignores the rest and gives me that error message. On the hard drive is plenty of space and the folder is writable. The first video is always imported without a problem. Current workaround is to import video files 1:1.

Has that happened to anybody else?

Copy, using the OS File manager, off the memory card from your camera to a separate folder other than the one used for Still images. Then in the import window select the folder you manually copied them to and seleect the "Add" option on the top of the import window.

Thank you. I copy them from the harddrive. I have tried using the same folder. Does not work either.

Wait a second. So if you move the videos outside of lightroom, then instead of moving them during import, you ADD them it still fails?

Hi BastiSan,

I've not seen that myself, and I often import mixed media (photos and videos) from my drone and GoPro cameras.

Can you tell us a bit more about your situation?

  • What platform and OS version?
  • What version of LR Classic?
  • What device created the video, and what format is it?
  • How are you importing? (From a card, from a folder on your internal drive, etc)

Thanks Michael.

  • What platform and OS version? - Windows 10 (always updated)
  • What version of LR Classic? - Always up-to-date. Right now it is the 8.4.1
  • What device created the video, and what format is it? - This is happening with the videos made with my Olympus OM-D EM 1 Mark II. It is a .mov file.
  • How are you importing? (From a card, from a folder on your internal drive, etc) - On my cards I have mixed media. I import photos and videos. But since only the first video is imported into LR I copy the rest of the videos on the hard drive and import them from there (1:1).

Here is a quick screencast of how it looks:

Edit/followup  1, 2, and 3 probably non starters if outside of lightroom you can move the videos to the folder you want them to be in under lightroom, and when you import them as an ADD, it fails.

1. Check user rights for both where the files are and where you are moving them to

2. Do some math, how much space do the files take up (total) compare that to drive space available in where you are moving them to?

3. Your OS temp file, where is it, how much space is available on the drive it is in?

4. Login to your computer using the Admin account. Does it behave then? If so login using a different or new local account, does that behave? Problem with an account?

Thank you for your suggestions.

1. Check user rights for both where the files are and where you are moving them to

Both folders and the files have all permissions.

2. Do some math, how much space do the files take up (total) compare that to drive space available in where you are moving them to? There is enought space.

3. Your OS temp file, where is it, how much space is available on the drive it is in? There are over 100 GB free. This happens even if I try to move two files a total of 500 MB. Only the first file will be imported.

4. Login to your computer using the Admin account. Does it behave then? If so login using a different or new local account, does that behave? Problem with an account? I always use the Admin account. It is so strange because it is always only one file that is being imported.

As you have Windows, and as such Defender, perhaps that is causing issues.

Thanks for the suggestion but I do not use the defender. However, I was looking around the security features.

I am getting closer to a resolution on this.  At least I know I can now "add" (if not move or copy).  The big question I have now is this:

If I am importing into lightroom from a folder.  Where the hell is it moving or copying to?  (Is it a folder in the lightroom catalog folder?)

I notice that my folders are all set to "read only" (as far as I know they always have been, but I never had a problem adding to, or moving things in and out of them).  Also, if I uncheck the read only box, the changes do not stick.  Thus I found another youtube that seems to explain how to do that (Since I cannot imput the link Google:  "How to Fix Folder Keeps Reverting to Read Only on Windows 10").  Seems easy enough, but if I go through all this I want to make sure it works....I don't want to make a lot of unnecessary changes needlessly since I find there is always a domino effect.

Maybe I do not need to "copy" or "move" but it will torment me to the end of my days until I figure out why I can't do this.

And the reason all of this started was I had to move the lightroom catalog to my pc because was that it was downloading from onedrive constantly, and it was a neverending battle.  And Bridge was the worst as it made me download my entire photo folder even though I only clicked on one or two photos.  I blocked the program a couple of times to make it stop, but it kept right on triggering the downloads every time I opened Bridge.  Now, I have set it to see only a "local" folder in which I will move things that I want to work on.  When I am done, I will "export" them.  (incidentally, exporting to OneDrive seems to be no problem).

However, this leads me to my other big question about Lightroom/Bridge.  Once I export finished files with metadata embedded, will Lightroom keep track of where they are, or does Bridge do that.  The reason I ask, is I don't want to keep copies on my pc forever.  But I can't keep them on onedrive because Bridge seems to require they be synced locally in order for them to be visible.
