Denoise AI unknown error

I get a Enhance errors:  Denoise was not applied  - there was an unknown error (1)
on every ARW file i try from my sony a7iv camera
macos - macmini 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7

I just noticed that you're using a Mac mini. If this is the 2018 model, then your computer uses an integrated GPU (Intel UHD Graphics 630) which has got access to around 1.5GB of shared system memory.  The system requirements for LrC 12.x are linked to below. Note the minium GPU memory is 2GB. I suspect this is the reason Denoise doesn't work on your system.

 

Worth noting for the future - always include your 'System Info'. This ensures that folk trying to help don't end up second guessing possible culprits. In your case, providing the System Info (obtainable from Help > System Info menu) would also highlight whether you're using an eGPU, which is fairly common for users of 2018 Mac mini.

Had the same issue. 

Updated graphics card- no change. 

Updated Camera Raw and that fixed it for me.

Thank you!  I've been trying to fix this Denoise/Enhance Error on a MBP and I'd tried everything in the threads I could find (uninstall/reinstall LRC, move disks, turn off GPU, update OS, check disk access, change the RAW compression) and nothing worked (kept getting "Denoise not applied - There was an unknown error") - but updating the Camera Raw application fixed it!

...and I've just needed to repeat this (i.e. update Camera Raw) when the same error occurred using LR-Classic 14.3.

I have the exact same problem. I have a Sony A7 (1st gen), and I get an error on all my ARW images. I have a 16" MacBook Pro with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GPU RAM. Intel Core-i9 8-Core, 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM running Lightroom Classic. All software (Lighroom, Creative Cloud and MacOS 13.4 up to date). 

 

I am a long-time Lightroom Classic user and this issue is very dissapointing (and frustrating).

 

I am about to try Rikk Flohr's suggestion of uninstalling LrC and it's preferences. I'll report back later.

I have finally solved my Denoise AI problem. Firstly, resetting Lightroom preferences or re-installing Lightroom does not fix the issue, at least for me.. it seems related to Intel Turbo Boost. I installed a free tool called Turbo Boost Switcher that sits in the MacOS menu bar, which allows you to disable Turbo. Doing so, and waiting for the CPU temperature to cool and fall under 80'C, Lightroom's Denoise worked a charm. I've gone back and tried dozens of photos that failed and all of them now work !! 

 

Give it a try, I hope it give you some level of success.

I have a Mac Mini 2018 (my specs listed below).
I initially had the same error, but I noticed that I received it when I started the process and went ahead opening Chrome. However, even with Chrome closed after, I kept getting the error. I simply Quit LrC, allowed back up, reopen LrC and proceeded to try again. This time I ensured not to open any other software. Just allowed it to continue. Denoise was set to 50%. Estimated was 6mins, but I think it finished much faster.

I ended up buying an eGPU to get rid of those pesky errors (and enable some 3D gaming as a bonus). Works like a charm now.

Hi, I am also getting the same "Denoise was not applied" error with my new machine (Mac Studio). Not sure if there was a solution to this yet? It was working just fine and denoising within seconds, but then stopped working. Thanks.

That's a different error than what some others have reported here. Please post a screenshot (not a phone pic) of the full error message.

 

You're on Mac OS 12.4, which is a year old. On Mac, the only way to get updated graphics drivers is to update to the latest version of Mac OS (13.3.1). LR's AI commands are very sensitive to bugs in graphics drivers (of which there are many, which is why the manufacturers frequently release updates).

in Photoshop where is the noise reduction slider in RAW editing.

updated to 24.4.1  on a Mac   the NOISE REDUCTION slider in Photoshop is gone. whatever DENOISE is, 1)it takes over ONE minute per file and doesn't allow you to customize. why would you remove a major feature  and replace it with one that doesn't work and takes over 1 minute Per file?

luminance is not the same as the noise reduction slider...it isn't doing anything. also 'denoise' doesn't work either.

I've been having the same problem in LR. I got a few to work but now they won't. However, I'm able to do it in ACR no problem (so far, anyway!). It's killing my workflow but it's working.

@Yuval Barkai and @Martin.J.D, LR gives "unknown error" when an AI command chokes on the graphics processor, usually because it has an out-of-date (buggy) graphics driver.  

 

Martin, update your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site:
https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

 

Yuval, the only way to get a newer Mac graphics driver is by updating Mac OS to the latest version your hardware will support.


Martin and Yuval, if updating the graphics driver doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let us see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.

 

Note that LR's AI commands always use the graphics processor regardless of the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor:

This is the error message, odd thing is - worked fine on the first 2 images this morning, then stopped working. Enhance time went from 3 minutes to 24 minutes on said image but failed.

I just noticed that you're using a Mac mini. If this is the 2018 model, then your computer uses an integrated GPU (Intel UHD Graphics 630) which has got access to around 1.5GB of shared system memory.  The system requirements for LrC 12.x are linked to below. Note the minium GPU memory is 2GB. I suspect this is the reason Denoise doesn't work on your system.

 

Worth noting for the future - always include your 'System Info'. This ensures that folk trying to help don't end up second guessing possible culprits. In your case, providing the System Info (obtainable from Help > System Info menu) would also highlight whether you're using an eGPU, which is fairly common for users of 2018 Mac mini.

Thanks for that! I have the same problem here and I am disappointed that it can't use the CPU as a backup. Isn't there a way to tweak that? (I'd be glad to just wait instead of having to buy an eGPU...). Thanks!

Unfortunately not.  LR's AI masking runs just fine (albeit 5x more slowly) without a GPU, but Adobe stubbornly refuses to provide an option disabling the use of the GPU for AI masking, even though it would be trivial:

But Denoise might run proportionately much slower on a CPU than AI masking.  Some people have reported that Denoise runs in 10-12 seconds on a newer midrange graphics card, while others have reported it taking 20-30 minutes on much older cards (e.g. 7 years old).  But since GPUs and CPUs are much different beasts, it's also possible we'd see just the same 5x slowdown on CPUs that we see with AI masking (i.e. 50-60 seconds instead of 10-12 seconds).

 

You could test this out by restarting your computer in Windows safe mode or Mac OS safe mode, which disables use of a graphics card. (This won't work on Apple Silicon Macs, just Intel Macs.) This test is likely useful only as an experiment, since LR could otherwise be too sluggish in safe mode.  

 

If you run this test, let us know the results.  I can't do it yet since I my test machine runs Windows ARM and there's a Creative Cloud bug preventing the installation of LR on Windows ARM.
