Question

Editing a photo automatically abandoned while files are syncing

Using LrC on macos (latest versions). 3/3 times now, while I'm editing a photo, my edit session exits without warning while I'm adjusting one of the effects settings such as clarity or dehaze on a linear mask I applied. I noticed that when this happens, the little sync status cloud in upper right tells me its syncing a few files (< 5). When issue occurs a different number of files are syncing.

I very much doubt its the file I'm editing, but hard to know since LrC no longer tells me which file(s) are syncing after the recent update. Even if it was syncing the file I'm editing, the sync should not rip away my edit work without warning or explanation.

I attached a video showing me editing a photo, then all of a sudden "poof" the image goes away. When I reopen the image, the changes I was making in the first part of the video are gone.

The diagnostic log reveals multiple file copies with the same capture time. The engineers have asked if this file contains several Virtual Copies, which are also synced, and possibly have different development settings?

No virtual copies were created using LrC. Detailed steps of events coming via email reply.

I passed your screenshot of the history panel onto the Classic team. They would like to obtain a complete diagnostic report from you.

Restart Lightroom and induce the failure again.

Then For LrClassic:

Go to Preferences

Lightroom Sync tab

Hold down [Alt/Opt]

Click [Generate Diagnostic Log]

Post it to a share service such as Dropbox or similar and let us know the link.

Awesome, thanks Rikk!

The repro steps for me are to just start lightroom and the repetitive syncing continues after pausing/resuming sync, leaving LrC closed for 1 hour and restarting. No editing or file changing needed, it's just stuck in the sync loop at this point.

Here's the link to the dropbox folder:

Here's the current screenshots showing History of continuous syncing for IMG_2442.jpg.

about 3-4 more pages of similiar sync history.
Then here's a screenshot showing the very beginning of the history when I imported from my iPhone at 3pm yesterday 9/9

Check that you do not have an active filter, that filters out the image because of something you do, or because of a sync action. The same could happen if you are in a smart collection and what you do, or the sync action, changes the image so it no longer fits the criteria of that smart collection.

Hi Johan, thanks for the reply. I made sure there were no active filters enabled, and the images are not part of any smart collection criteria. Even after restarting Lightroom, I'm seeing the same behavior which feels like a consequence of the Lightroom syncing/resyncing of 2, 5, 3, 2, etc.. files which baffles me as no changes have occurred in the last 12 hours - any legitimate syncing should have concluded last night.

I attached another video from few minutes ago where edits were reset after 90 seconds. The video shows develop module with "No Filter" set, then me setting the color label to red, and changing a couple of the presence sliders. Then checking the sync status and "poof" edits are all reset.

As a former QA person, anytime customer work is unintentionally lost should be considered a bug that needs to be fixed. What's the next step to filing a bug report for this issue?

The history panel for this image tells a concerning story - many repetitive imports. Even while typing this reply, the imports continue. If I can find a way to stop the never ending importing, I bet I could edit the photo.
