Images are not synchronised in the folder, while ‘Synchronise folder ...’

Question

When I am in the ‘Folder’ area in LightRoom classic, I see the number of 26 images behind a folder. When I go to the Finder, around 300 images are displayed.
If I now synchronise the folder, LightRoom recognises that approx. 274 images need to be added. These are all CR3 files with an associated XMP file.
When I start the synchronisation, I get the message that LightRoom has not found any images to import. Surely the images should be imported?

What is the reason for this and how can I fix it?

Normally the reason for this is that those 274 images are already in the catalog, but they were copied to a different folder when you imported them. When Lightroom initially just checks the folder against the same folder in the catalog, it sees that there are 274 images in that folder that it does not seem to have in the catalog. But when it starts the import routine it discovers them after all, and so it does not import these copies.
