Import Slow

Question

I hit "import" at 8:15 this morning and it is now 10:15pm and LR has only imported 599 photos and the progress bar is about 25% full. There are probably around 2,000 photos on this card. It's a 128GB card with 300mb write speed. The photos are being imported to an external drive, but the catalog is on my HD. Photos are all raw, I shoot live stage photography and have to be able to adjust the lighting. When I shoot our show I always fill up the card. I used to always hit "import" when I go to bed and it's done when I get up, so less than 7 hours. It's been over 14 hours and it's 25% done. What is going on??

Will, more than a bit late now, but in the future I would advise, when "Importing" many many photos, such as when on a photoshoot , that you change your workflow to the following:

Close any application, web browse, etc, including LrC.
Outside of LrC, using Finder, copy the photos to the desired location on your hard drive.
NOte that I said copy, not move. Do not trust move until after you have backups.
Go have dinner, or something, this may take awhile .
When the copy is finished, If your backup drive(s) are available, take an opportunity to back up those photos.
When the copy and any optional backup is finished, launch LrC and select the Import button
Select the ADD option, and make any desired changes to Previews, Presets, Metadata, keywords, and Naming
Be aware that applying any Presets, and any Previews other than minimal will slow this down.
Select the desired photos and Import them.
If you are selecting any previews, or presets, you may want to go and busy yourself with something away from the computer.

This will get your photos on to your hard drive a lot quicker than Importing in LrC via Copy or Copy as DNG
If you select Minimal presets, that well help at this Import stage, but will slow you down at the Develop stage.
