Lightroom 5 is becoming slow, mainly in the Library module

PC, Windows 7 Ultimate, 12 gigs ram, Lightroom 5 CC, lots of hard drive space

Based on advice given here when I started using LR, I created one catalog. It now has around 185,000 images.

Lately, I have been seeing very slow performance when moving files from folder to folder on the same hard drive. It is also very slow displaying keywords and I now get messages when I get ready to leave lightroom that it is still writing data to the metadata.

As a test, I went to the file manager and copied around 50 of the image files from one folder to another. It was alsmot instantaneous. I also tried moving files while in Nikon View NX2 and they were also very fast. Then I ran LR and tried moving the same files to the same folder and it took a long time to move just one image. 3 minutes?

I optimized the hard drive and I let Norton clean the registry.

So, the issues I am seeing seem to be in Lightroom and not on the system itself. LR is working fine in the Develop module. I don't see a lot of issues there.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

At last I think that I found solution that works at least in my PC.

Again when browsing thru internet, I found discussion about same problem from the photoshop forums. The solution was simple, change Metadata panel to view default data instead of EXIF + IPTC (that I have been used in LR always).

    No more slowdowns, black screens...

Cannot still believe this, but everything has worked smoothly couple of days now.

    Here's the relevant thread:

It's a simple workaround to a bug that has struck a number of us.

Lightroom code is slow! Adobe is an old company with mainly programmers of the old single threat coding, their GPU programming skills are horrible, CPUs now days have become more parallel, even new generation CPUs barelly have better single threat performance, GPUs that are strong in matrix parallel computing are being used for processing Video and Image processing as it is very matrix based computing, to be able to do so, programmers must know how to program OpenCL or CUDA code. Adobe does not seem to code correctly OpenCL, that's why so many of the competitors have OpenCL enhanced apps but not Adobe, Adobe Premiere Elements it's an amateur video editor and while pretty much all their competition use OpenCL and CUDA, Adobe does not, even Photoshop has limited use, most of the graphic cards are not compatible in the Adobe Premiere professional video editor, the so called Mercury video engine, but the years old SONY Vegas uses almost in everything. maybe because Adobe thinks they are too big to care. No matter how nice your features are it's the end of the road when costumers can barely work, Capture ONE 9 uses OpenCL, ACDSee Pro and Ultimate have impressive OpenCL features, and Adobe still resting.

Hi.  For a couple of years I've been struggling to find a way to remove the lag every time I click on anything or try to scroll in the Library module... I tried everything suggested in this thread, but nothing worked.

I just found another thread that said to remove my Develop Presets and it worked!! I had too many custom presets that I'd created over the years and for some reason it cause the Library module to slow down...

    I took the files from "Macintosh HD/Users/User Account/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Develop Presets/"

and moved them to a folder on my desktop, restarted LR and now there is no lag!!  Finally!!

I hope this works for everyone who has this problem.

    Thanks,

    Dustin

Dustin, you might also consider disabling the Quick Develop pane, as described by Chris Waring in this thread: Lightroom 5.4 Library Module slow performance: FIX found! That would still let you access the presets in full Develop mode.

Many of us meet this problem, would anyone tell me how to reproduce this problem? I tried many times, hide/show the metadata panel, the performance is just good.

    Thanks.

Have you optimized the LR catalog recently?

Oh yes, I should have mentioned I optimize the catalog and test the integrity every time I exit LR and will not be needing the computer for a while—such as lunch time or before going to bed. And this problem is happening in LR after a fresh reboot. Lots of things start getting sluggish on my computer once a stitch a set of three or four 35 mpx images, so I reboot regularly to clean that up. And this happens when LR is the only program running after a reboot. I have my LR pref set to Standard preview image size, and I have it set to purge the previews after a week.

I haven't tried closing this catalog and opening a smaller catalog.

LR 5 has the new Smart Previews feature. I don't know right off how I have that set. Will check next time I open LR.
