Question

Lightroom cannot read the video (.mov) file.

Lightroom cannot read the video file. The codec needed to read it is missing or unavailable. (20)

Lightroom is suddenly not able to read the video .mov files from my iPhone.

Where do I find the needed codec?

Purge the video cache in lightroom preferences. Probably not needed but I also increased the maximum video cache size fro 3g to 20g.

Worked like a charm.

I want to +10000 to @Deez_Nuts1's tips. After reading a ton of articles about HEVC/HEIC compatibility and feature supports and trying out many tip, unfortunately none of those worked for my case.

But, "Purge the video cache in lightroom preferences" worked like a chram to me! For those who haven't tried this, worth trying!!

I cannot import videos from my iPhone 7+ running IOS12 into Lightroom Classic CC 7.5.  Any fixes for this?

However, I did just discover a work-around of sorts.  I added the videos to a shared collection in lightroom.adobe.com and it uploaded them into my LR Classic CC.

Hi All,

For those who are referring to HEVC and HEIC files support in Lightroom. Please check out this article: HEIC and HEVC media files support in Lightroom and Camera Raw

Thanks,

Nobody at Adobe cares about this subject! Since I am using my iPhone8+ I can not open new Videos with Lightroom. This problem occurs ONLY with Lightroom - in Bridge I can open it an look at it (also on any other program!!!)

I wonder by when Adobe will provide a solution ! Right now I am upset and Lightroom gets more and more upsetting instead of being a help!

I am waiting ......

They do and I am certain it will get fixed. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is that windows does not supply the decoding libraries for HEVC video and on Mac OS X you only get them in High Sierra so they have to somehow code around that. For other products (premiere. media encoder, etc.) Adobe has you install a separate library for HEVC for legal issues (they have to pay a fee for every installation I think), so this is fraught with problems and perhaps why it hasn't happened yet.

For now, just set your phone to most compatible or use the camera in Lightroom CC itself (much recommended as it can shoot raw and automatically syncs back to Classic so very convenient) and you will have no issues.

I'm curious if Adobe is ever going to provide support for the HEVC video files, created by my iPhone 7 running iOS 11, in Lightroom Classic CC. I'm running MacOS High Sierra and iOS 11, Lightroom Classic CC, everything up to date. Fortunately, images from the iPhone 7 are not a problem, but I would really like to be able to manage my videos with Lightroom Classic CC too.

Adobe, please?

Adobe product developers don't participate in this forum. Please add your constructive opinion to this feature request in the official Adobe feedback forum: Lightroom Classic: Please support HEVC (H.265) video support | Photoshop Family Customer Community . Be sure to click Vote and Follow in the upper-right corner. This will make it a little more likely Adobe will prioritize the feature, and you'll be notified whenever its status changes.

Meanwhile, the only workaround for managing iPhone videos in LR is to disable HEVC on iOS.  Check the option Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.  It's a workaround, not a long-term solution.

Thank you johnrellis. I have long ago voted on that page. Going by the votes (34), this won't get implemented. I do hope that Adobe has a different process for strategic changes, than to let the community vote.

I know about the workaround. I know the workaround is not Adobe's official answer, but I don't think it is an acceptable answer. First of all, the workaround only works going forward. Any movies previously recorded can still not be imported if the workaround is implemented. Second, it's been a long time since the standard was defined by the Moving Picture Experts Group in MPEG-H Part 12. I know that Apple is one of the first to adopt this standard, but it is not an Apple invention. Given the current cycle of changes in Lightroom, Adobe could have implemented support, if they wanted to, and if they see this as strategic.

Having the same issue on the latest version of Mac OS X (not Windows). Just randomly stopped being able to import iPhone videos - which is a pretty big deal for me. Any ideas?

I'm having the same issue on MacOS High Sierra in combination with LR Classic CC as well. Can't import video-files (.MOV) from iPhone7 and 8. Added a new ticket on Nov-19, 2017, no reply from Adobe however... i've tried the suggestion done by Akash Sharma above, however to no avail. It still doesn't solve the problem. My iPhone video's play fine in Quicktime...

Hi Larey,

Which version of Lightroom are you using?

Are you able to open those videos in other apps like iTunes?

Please refer this similar discussion .AVI files not importing and let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Akash

I had a similar challenge when I upgraded to Windows 10 and decided to delete Quicktime from my computer.  At the time there were some internet stories about a security issue with the Windows version of Quicktime.   When I put Quicktime back on my computer, Lightroom played video files as I had been used to.   Somewhere "under the hood" some Adobe software borrows codecs(?) from other sources.  Premiere Elements is another one.

Note that Apple no longer "supports" the Windows version of Quicktime.  However, they still offer it for download and it includes a method to install only the support files.  Apparently the security issue is in the quicktime.exe file.   Adobe has also stated about a year ago that they were working away from needing Quicktime for anything.

Hope my guess helps!
