Lightroom Classic creating a duplicate Tiff file in main folder if image is edited from a subfolder

Wondering if anyone can help or if this is a bug hopefully Adobe can fix it. What is happening is if I have a folder with images (let's call it main folder) and then there is a sub folder in that main folder with images and if I edit one of the images from that sub folder by bringing the raw file into Photoshop(via edit in Photoshop in LR dialog), doing some edits in PS and saving back as a Tiff file. What's happening is two copies of that Tiff are being saved, one in the sub folder and one in the main folder where sub folder is contained. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it, or is it a bug? I did uninstall LR Classic and re-install it, but that did not work. I also see no options in preferences that would seem to be associated with this. Thanks for any insights or solutions.

Right! By hitting Cmd-S periodically, you already saved the 16 bits Photoshop file in the subfolder where the original resides. If you then use 'Save as' at the end of the workflow, you will save a second copy (unless you overwrite the first one). The save as dialog will contain the destination of that second copy, so it seems to me you are doing this yourself by not paying attention to this destination, which is apparently the main folder. So you will end up with the 16 bits file in the subfold

I doubt that two copies are being created, and I have never heard of such a problem. Lightroom Classic can show images in the main folder and its subfolders, or only the images in a certain folder. Sounds like you have the option 'Show Photos in Subfolders' enabled.

I appreciate your response but that is not the problem. It litterally creates two copies. When you click on each of the photos, to the right in the inspector panel, where it shows which folder each image resides in, they are different and one copy in each folder. I use the "Show Photos in Subfolders" feature all the time and very familiar with how that works.

When you were done with your edits in PS, did you finish that by clicking on (what one):

  • Close

or

  • Save

or

  • Save As

My process is to make adjustments in LR then Cmd-E  to edit in PS from RAW as a 16 bit file in ProPhoto RGB color space, then as I'm working in PS, I periodically save using Cmd-S. When finished, I flatten image, convert to 8-bit, then do a save as (Cmd-Shift-S) so I can save as an LZW compressed tiff, then once saved, I do a Cmd-W to close the image.

The thing is, this is my workflow always, but the duplicate Tiff files being created only occurs when I open and work on an image from the sub-folder. It never happens with any images from the main folder, and it always places the duplicate in the main folder. Thanks for any insights. I can create this issue every time.

"then do a save as (Cmd-Shift-S)"

Would that not in fact create the extra copy?

Right! The save as dialog will contain the destination of that second copy, so it seems to me you are doing this yourself by not paying attention to this destination, which is apparently the main folder. So you will end up with the 16 bits file in the subfolder, and the 8 bits file in the main folder. If you start from an original in the main folder however, then the 'Save as' will ask you if you want to overwrite the intermediate 16 bits file. You hit 'OK' and so this time you'll end up with a single copy.

Thank you for your help! That was what was happening! For some reason when I do a Save as, it takes a moment for it to default to the sub folder I was just working from, and instead defaults to main folder and adds it to the main folder. When opening the Save as dialog, it first defaults to the main folder, but after a few seconds, it then it switches automatically to the sub folder. Not sure why there is this behavior of a delay and why it would do that (working off a Samsung 2TB SSD). I'm generally pressing keystrokes fairly quickly, so just need to slow down and wait or specifically target the right folder. I appreciate everyone's insights, as this was driving me mad!
