Lightroom Classic quickly alocates all VRAM and become laggy

Hello,


Lightroom Classic after opening program and 2-3 photos (24Mpx) quickly alocates all VRAM and becomes unusable for short periods af time. Zoom in - Zoom Out on photos ant it just lagging.


only solution to stop lagging, use GPU only for display:

computer: AMD ryzen 7700, 32 GB DDR5 RAM, nVidia 4060 8 GB VRAM, Samsung 980 PRO where catalog located (plenty of free sace), photos on another SATA SSD (Samsung 870 EVO (plenty of free sace)) latest Windows 11, latest GPU studio drivers.


searching Reddit, there is same problems from 2020 year with no solution.

First try to reset the preferences to the default settings.

Reset Procedure:

  • Close Lightroom.
  • Windows: Hold down [Alt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
  • Mac: Hold down [Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
  • Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
  • Close Lightroom.
  • Restart Lightroom.

 

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

Is your system up-to-date? Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver. Please make also sure that you have installed the Studio version and not the Game Ready version of your NVidia driver.

Very little inprovement after settings reset. Still alocates all VRAM memory and starts allocading RAM and lags. We pay money for Adobe, but they software is poorly designed.

When you last updated that NVIDIA GPU driver, did you select  the Studio Driver? And did you select Custom install type as to force a clean install?

This seems to happen on a few systems. It comes up from time to time, but  I can't replicate it on any of my two machines. And I have tried many times.

 

It's normal that VRAM usage goes pretty high pretty quickly (80% or so), but it should never max out, and it should never impact general performance. The normal situation is that the memory is reallocated as needed and always released again as other processes need it. I often see it drop if I, say, open Photoshop.

 

So why some people see this I don't know. There may be a bug somewhere, but it has to be specific to certain scenarios. Post full Help > System Info. If you have Photoshop installed, the System Info there is much more complete and extensive, so it could be easier to spot problems there.

Ok, there is some kind of problem here. There seems to be a secondary integrated GPU involved, and that shouldn't happen. That's a conflict.

 

This doesn't make much sense for a desktop machine (which I assume this is). Do you have a secondary display connected? Do you get an integrated GPU up in Device Manager? If so, disable it.

 

In any case, you didn't answer if you performed a clean driver install. That's important. Uncheck all the extra gaming components, you only need the basic driver.

just tried for the first time not Nvidia studio driver, but game ready 552.12 and for the first time seeing vram clearing much faster. Very interesting, becouse studio drivers is always recomended for creators.

OK, that is interesting. Not because gaming drivers are necessarily "better" - it usually goes the other way -  but because it confirms this is connected to the driver. And maybe a future driver update gets it to work properly.

What make/model of computer do you have? If a home or shop built one, what Motherboard? Wondering about integrated video driver, and any discrete GPU on the Motherboard. (rare on workstations)

 

Also, can you clarify if you have more than one GPU card installed.

Did you manage to resolve the issue? I have exactly the same problem.
Os is Win11, CPU is Ryzen 5700x, I have 64 GB RAM, GeForce 4600 RTX 8GB. I have a cache and catalog files on 1 TB m2 drive, where more than 7% is free. Photos are on the HDD where more than 50% is free.
And behavior is when I start LR Classic, it works well, but after 10-15 photos, all VRAM is allocated and then it is a nightmare to process pictures.
I have tried both studio and gaming drivers from nVidia, optimizing catalog, and restarting preferences. The system is up to date.

One thing to add. I have noticed, that this happens after I use any mask. Until then VRAM usage sits around 6GB. But if I go to masks, and make any adjustments (like with a mask of sky/person) then VRAM goes to 8 GB and even if it drops for a second, it goes back to the maximum very quickly, even if I do not use masks on any of the next pictures that I process.

Okay, the thing that worked for me was disabling GPU acceleration in the LR. Now LR is blazing fast. Everything works as expected.

True. But hard to say whether the problem is on the LR side or rather nVidia GPU driver. But I remember, when this feature (full GPU acceleration) was introduced I had the same situation when I had a rather strong GPU, but no matter what, when I had the acceleration on it was much, much slower than with off.
Not it is the same, when VRAM is full, all OS is laggy, and going from picture to picture in the LR library takes around 8-10 seconds just to show the preview. And I talk about RAWs from Sony A7 III (24Mpix) and Samsung S23U GCAM (12Mpix) so rather small ones.

Exactly the same issue for me, on RTX 2080 Super O8G. I noticed that this happened after update to win11, but i'm not sure. Actually i was doing clean install of win11, so maybe it brings new drivers, and new version of LC i'm not sure because i didn't track versions.
