Question

Lightroom. how to delete xmp?

Hello. Probably by mistake, I created xmp files for all my RAW instead of storing my edits directly in the Lightroom DB. How to eliminate all these useless files (Win10) ? Thank you.

Well, it's probably not a meaningful mistake, as the others have mentioned, because your edits are always in the catalog itself, and the edits in the catalog are always what Lightroom Classic uses, regardless of the presence or absence on xmp files. Note the usage of the word "always" there, as there is no option that allows this behavior to be turned off.

The easiest thing to do is to just ignore the xmp files and turn off the feature in Lightroom Classic that automatically creates xmp files.

Merci.

All edits are maintained in the database. You can write the xmp to files, but LR keeps it internally as well. So you can just delete the files manually.

Experiment with one or two files just to reassure yourself. Delete or move the xmp files, and observe that your edit history is still intact.

Firstly, the edits are always stored first and foremost in the Lightroom catalog database. Storing them additionally in XMP sidecar files is an option that some people use all the time, whereas others never bother.....if they concern you, you can simply manually delete them using File Explorer. Lightroom will continue to show the presence of the XMP sidecar file in the Metadata panel, but it won't be bothered if they are deleted.
