Question

LR claims photos are missing and Collections are broken

Two big issues have been happening for 4 months now. The 1st issue is I will sit down to edit photos, import them, edit them, then go to export the images all in the same sitting and LRc tells me the photos do not exist on the disk. Nothing was moved. The other issue is when I go to create a collection I click the + on collection and then create collection and nothing happens. No collection is created, no error message, nothing. The only way to create a collection is to restart LRc and I can create one collection then I need to restart if I want to make another one.

I'm running the most current version but this problem has been happening for 4 months now. I have tried optimizing my catalog as well.

Possible cause ... photos are on the camera card, you import them using ADD, and somewhere along the way you disconnect the camera card from the computer, for example by removing the camera card from the card reader, or disconnect the card-reader from the computer (if you are using an external card reader).

I'm only using add when I am adding images on a drive to LR and don't need to copy. When I am importing from a card I am using copy and copying them to the computers HD.

Perhaps the wording you chose means one thing to you and a different thing to me. "drive to Lr" could mean types CFExpress cards or XQD cards which LrC considers to be drives, and you choose to Add, which causes the symptoms you see. Can you please clarify what you mean?

In addition, this still does not rule out that you accidentally chose Add when you should have chosen copy. In LrC, the metdata panel will show you exactly where LrC think the photos are located. Please check that as well.

Have you tried resetting the preferences?  Corrupted preferences can cause all kinds of strange problems.

Tried that. No help. It seems one thing that triggeres it is if I import using the Add feature.

What is the reasoning for using Add instead of Copy? Are you adding from a camera card, external hard drive, server? Can you post a screen shot of your folder panel in the Library module with an image that is missing?

Hello - Are you creating Smart Previews upon import? Can you right-click on one of the images that Lr says doesn't exist and select Show in Finder? Can you look at the information under the histogram on the same image and see if it says Smart Preview or Original or Original + Smart Preview? What operating system are you running on your mac? What version of Lightroom Classic are you running?

Not creating smart previews. The metadata does not update when I look through photos but the histogram does. I can right click and hit show in finder and it brings it up fine. I'm running Sequoia 15.2 and LRc 14.1.1
