dumdidum.. still waiting.. i think we can agree to call it a slowfix now?

and well... i doubt there will be a fix before the regular point release.

I certainly guessed wrong about this one - disturbing really...

My workaround works fine for most exports (those that don't spawn additional exports from within). For example, web plugins which export 2 or 3 copies per "export", may not be fixable using the plugin.

Hard to fathom why Adobe did not see their way to quickly roll out a proper solution.

BEWARE: There is a bug in the latest version of ImageMagick's mogrify (6.8.6) - images are coming out untagged, so export as sRGB unless you have an older version (6.7.3 is ok).

Can somebody confirm for me exactly when (under what conditions) the problem happens, and exactly when it doesn't?

@now, PreviewExporter can be used to export/publish lo-rez copies, sharpened and noise-reduced, but I'm hoping to add the option to automatically do a regular export when the problem won't occur, and auto-switch to a preview export in case the problem would otherwise occur.

That way we can just insert the export-filter, check the "Lr 5.0 auto-work-around" box, and forget - problem pretty-much solved (for those of us brave enough to use the plugin I mean).

Thanks,

Rob

What a great guy! If the export size is smaller than 1/3 the original size,

noise reduction is not applied.

So at exactly 1/3, no problem?

And do you mean 1/3 total area (i.e. width x height), or 1/3 long edge, or...

I am also not sure if I understand this problem correctly. My workflow is to import RAWs into Lightroom, do some basic adjustment, export them in full size as Smart Objects to Photoshop, work on them with Silver Efex Pro 2, save them, then export them from Lightroom with output sharpening in a small size for my website.

Does this problem apply to me?

Thanks.

It is a known issue, documented by Adobe, that exporting from LR5.0 with a size 1/3 of the original size or smaller will result in the problem, so depending on the ratio of the original to your small-size-for-my-website size, it may apply to you.

I'm sorry but at this point it is clear there will be no hotfix.

It is called just a fix and accrding to one Adobe employee (written in a post past Sunday?) this is coming ASAP, which again means absolutely nothing. No date = no promise. That I already knew myself that they are working on it.

I, like many of you, have also used LR since beginning. Yes, there have been bugs with early releases but I can't remember something seriously blocking for the essential - develop and sharing (export).

The beta for the current version was working for me, I didn't think twice to start using the full version.

What a mistake, no hotfix, no fix, already 2.5 weeks since the release.

I know this is not an encourageing message, but what the hell is going on???

You really don't know that, do you? And since some people read this forum looking for answers (admittedly, they should have a big chunk of salt handy while reading), consider not spreading rumors.

If you are talking about the post by Dave Merchant, he's not an Adobe Employee.

Eric Chan of Adobe said (paraphrased) "we'll fix it". - right: totally non-commital on the time frame:

My guess: Adobe will release a hotfix, but they want to get a few things in, not just lo-rez sharpening/nr - just a guess.

I have a question.  Um... IS IT FIXED YET?

No, probably we have to wait until 5.1

Ok, people I think we are missing the point here, at least for me.

I have a Canon Xti and Canon 7D in LR4 the Export on my images after applying NR and Sharpening work just fine and well, I have different Exports, but usually use 720 at the longest side and Export as a Full JPG and I allways, allways had perfect results in LR4.

Now in LR5 this doesn't work. You don't have to crop or do any onther changes in your images. Unless, of course that Adobe said so because they found out they just blew it.

the bug should be easily fixed.. at least it worked in the beta....

Hopefully, I just found out if I increment the size to 2048 it works just fine, but anything less than that and you are screw...

Exposure Time = 1/15"

F Number = F2.8

ISO Speed Ratings = 1600

I have the same problem. Also when I export from PSD.

Exported at 2048px long side, output sharpening works. Exported at 960px long site, 800px long side... no output sharpening visible.

In the previous versions, it was ok.

I'm also stuck: no going back to the previous versions, all catalogs are upgraded. Too bad...

You're not stuck.

All your earlier catalogs remain in place, unchanged, if you want to use them in earlier versions of Lightroom

Thanks. I forgot about that (although I hate going back to the beta, I love the other improvements in the final)

It all might be related to the different export times - the lower exported resolution, the faster the export is. Until approx half the resolution of the source is exported, then it takes the same amount of time as hires. Seems to me the source in LR5 is resized to approx double the exported size, then processed and then resized again - smart and much faster for web exports, but with those sharpening and NR issues.

June 10, 2013

where can we report this? i'm kinda stuck now - upgraded my catalog to lr5 format and deleted lr4 one. and with these issues i'd like to go back to lr4 until it get's fixed but i can't :/

I can reproduce the output sharpening issue, but not the noise reduction issue.  I get noise reduction no matter what I seem to try...on ISO 6400 images.

To test it out, try ISO 3200 or higher, don't crop and export JPEGs from 800 to 2000 pix longer size, each JPG 200px increment and it might appear when you check 100% one after another, usually in darker areas, color noise is easier indicator. The threshold for uncropped D700/D600 3200 ISO RAWs I tested seems to be between 1400-1600px longer side.

I've just found out too - it seems this issue is resolution dependend. There seems to be some kind of treshold for each raw source resolution/crop combination, see the attached photo (100% crop of exported JPEGs, one pixel difference)

June 10, 2013

you're right, changed jpeg size, noise reduction now works, but sharpening still doesn't.

June 10, 2013

so it seems lr5 has some major bugs in final version. strange. i always thought that's why they release beta - to find out problems and fix them.
