Metadata does not update in image file

New Here ,
Jan 30, 2020 Jan 30, 2020

When importing images from another folder with Lightroom Classic, the file renaming settings work as expected, but the metadata settings I've selected for the import don't update on the files. The new metadata from my preset does appear correct in the metadata panel of Lightroom Classic, but the same metadata is not reflected in the information of the actual file. I've tried importing 67 images, and I've tried importing a smaller batch of 5 images, to the same effect. I'm new to Lightroom Classic and I have watched a tutorial on this, is there another step I am missing here? To clarify, I am attempting to overwrite & make blank existing data in certain fields, as well as add information to previously blank fields.

Thanks!

By default, changes to a photo's metadata are stored in the catalog but not written back to the file. There will be a down-arrow icon in the upper-right corner of the thumbnail, indicating changed metadata hasn't been written back:

You can save the changed metadata fields back to the file by doing the menu command Metadata > Save Metadata To File.

Alternatively, you can set the preference Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP. There's no performance penalty for doing this. But beware that if you change the metadata of many photos, they will all appear as "changed" to your backup program and need re-backing up, which may or may not be an issue for you.
