Metadata in LrC v11.2 not saving automatically. Manual saving changes Metadata Date but not Status

All Lightroom Library photos and catalogs are on an external USB-3 drive.

My setup:

Catalog Preferences set to Automatically Write (metadata) changed to xmp files

I use only DNG files (camera RAW files converted on import) some TIFFs (generated by Photoshop or some third party apps, and a few jpegs.

 Auto updating metadata used to work, on LrC v10. I don’t recall noticing a Metadata saving problem when LrC v11 initially came out. Then, a v11 update broke that functionality. The latest update v11.2 did not restore this.

 The problem:

Metadata changes are not saved automatically even with that preference set in the Catalog Preferences. The Metadata Date never changes and the Status does not change, with Auto updating checked.

 If I manually save metadata (either from the Metadata Menu or left-clicking the badge in Grid View, the Metadata Date updates in the Library Metadata Panel, but the Metadata Status remains “Has been changed” and the Metadata Changed badge remains on the images in Grid View and the Film Strip.
