P: AI Masks Require updating and/or disappear

Community Beginner ,
May 29, 2025 May 29, 2025

Hello,

I recently had a call with Adobe support with no luck. I have found some threads on this but nothing presents a solution and it seems hard to find what the actual issue is.

If I edit a client gallery and use any healing brush tool or AI masking tool, the mask or healing brush/generative AI will get a red dot underneath after going back to the start of the gallery, my AI edits are gone....

I also noticed this happens 100% of the time when I quite and reopen lightroom, I can fix the mask, update ai settings but it just resets each time I open lightroom.

We tested a new catalogue, we tested a bunch of things with no luck.

We really need a fix on this Adobe it is killing workflow, not sure what broke this setting. I can't revert to an old version because I have lots of photos (I do 1 catalogue per year) and can't go back weeks of client work.

Also this catalogue was started at the begining of 2025 so there is no version 13 of this catalogue to revert to and test.

PLEASE HELP ADOBE!

For those in need of a temporary solution :

This workaround has helped:

Lightroom Classic stores AI masks in a file called Catalogname.lrcat-data. Sometimes, that file can get corrupted or have incorrect settings, which causes the masks to keep needing updates.

To test this:

1. Move that file out of your catalog folder.

2. Open Lightroom Classic, you’ll see a message about the missing data file.

3. Click Continue, and Lightroom will create a fresh version of it.

4. Then try updating one of your masks

@Aleke My .Ircat file is almost 5GB and contains more than 100k photo's. While I'd like to help solve the problem, I'm hesitant to share my entire catalog due to the potential for misuse of my photos. The problem of spontaneous AI changes has only occurred with one of my photos. Isn't there another way I can isolate and send the history of that photo's edits, for example?

Hello,

Back again to confirm that the issue is still very much ongoing. Some of the suggested workarounds help temporarily, but the problem inevitably returns. It’s been weeks now — this is becoming unworkable.

What’s especially frustrating is that this problem started after an update. So the question is: why can’t it be resolved with an update? What’s preventing Adobe from fixing something that Adobe itself introduced?

This is not a minor annoyance. For professional users like myself, this has a direct impact on our ability to deliver work, to meet deadlines, to serve clients. Our paycheck literally depends on this software working reliably. The true cost of this bug — in lost hours, missed moments, broken workflows — is much higher than it might seem from the outside.

We need a serious, structural solution, not more temporary workarounds. And we need clear communication from Adobe about how and when this will be fixed.

Please help Adobe ...

It's unbelievable. Nothing is fixing the problem; I have no idea what's causing it, and I'm constantly having to update my clients on delays.

Hi @GeMoMo! No need to send the photos, just the catalog file is perfect. When you share the catalog, we only get access to the metadata, your edit information, collections, and the history of changes. The actual image files stay completely separate and aren’t included.

Thanks so much!

Hi @shaylatiare! When you get a chance, could you send me your catalog file (the one with the .lrcat extension)? That would really help us look into this issue more closely.

Thanks so much, really appreciate your help!

Hi @shaylatiare! Thanks so much!
You can go ahead and send me a file-sharing link to both the .lrcat and .lrcat-data files through direct messages here in the Community.

Appreciate it!

The new AI Edit Status tool is a serious pain and never seems to work quite right.

I click update constantly but it almost never works, and in fact it is deleting the original AI mask and only keeping the Add or Subtract brush masks that I have done, so of course it will never update because the AI mask is gone (see attached screenshot).

It's becoming a serious time suck to go back and manually recreate the masks because remembering the original settings and adjustments is near impossible. Additionally I don't seem to be able to batch export like I used to, becuase of the constant mask updating, so it will export images without the edits I've made, so now I have to export one-by-one, which just adds to the time suck.

I have also just updated my graphics card driver and BIOS, as someone suggested that might help, but it didn't.

My system info is below the image - please help!

I'm also having the same issue and it is significantly impacting my professional workflow and output. What's doing on Adobe?

I too am having this issue. I am on the latest version of Mac OS, on the latest version of Lightroom and I am running on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra.

This issue did not exist before I updated to the latest version of Lightroom. I tried downgrading to fix it, but even that didn't work. I've subsequently re-upgraded.

The issue seems to be the new AI implementation.

As a professional photographer this is a killer. I can't trust that a waiter won't mysteriously pop up in the back of a delivered image. Doing images 'one by one' is fundamentally unrealistic for a professional working with hundreds or thousands of images. Even when I use the 'Update AI' button in the top right of the develop module, half the time it fails to update some of my Generative Remove edits and I have to do these manually. This is unworkable and Adobe needs to be much more proactive by talking to the community. This is a bug, and it needs to be treated as such.

The other thing that really galls me is that it completely destroys the concept of 'Snapshots'. I've always used Snapshots, since the beginning. Once an image is edited and 'complete' I hit a button on my loupedeck and it creates a 'Produced' snapshot. This tells me that this is the finalised version of the edit. I can go back in the future, re-edit if I wish, or recrop, but that 'Produced' version is like an edit metadata master. However, now, snapshots are utterly borked because using them is not reliably saving the remove data.

At the same time, in the same version, I am wrestling with the fact that the new Denoise doesn't work for me. I'm discussing that in a seperate thread. Needless to say this update is a MESS.

Sort this out Adobe - this is poor.

Can any Adobe Developers chime in on whether there's any sign of getting to the bottom of this bug? It's been a few weeks now and all I am hearing is crickets. I have shared catalogs and details and would appreciate some feedback.

@Aleke je rencontre le même problème, ce quo devient ingérable pour mon flux de travail. Je n'arrive pas à trouver où se trouve Catalogname.lrcat-data. Pouvez-vous me dire comment l'atteindre ? Je vous remercie beaucoup

Bonjour,

Anne Gentilleau
