P: Lightroom crashes when initiating tether

Community Beginner ,
Jan 23, 2024 Jan 23, 2024

Running Lightroom classic version 13.1 on m1 macbook pro on Mac OS Sonoma 14.3 and every time File > Tethered Capture > Start tethered capture and Press Ok, the application crashes. This happens both with and without a camera connected. My lightroom version is up to date and this crash happens everytime without fail. I've tried clearing the preferences and uninstalling/reinstalling the app as well. Has anyone experienced this? What's the resolution?

Hi Rikk,

Just wanted to let you know - I have updated this evening to Lightroom Classic 13.2 on Macbook Air M1 ( Sonoma 14.3.1).

Tethered capture now works (with Canon R5) and does not crash on hitting OK (wether a camera is connected or not).

Thanks for your help. David

We’ve reviewed the email address you use with this forum and find no crash reports in our system.

Did you see a crash dialog?

Do you use a different email address when filling out the crash report?

Was the crash dialog Adobe’s?  Apple’s?

I have submitted an Adobe crash report for this previously, but I went ahead and submitted another one under this email address just now.

@Braxton348722529n7a

No crash report from your address ever arrived.

The next time you crash, fill out the crash report COMPLETELY, and screenshot it and post it in this thread.

Thank you.

Rikk,

No. There was no crash dialog. Have read everything here and there's nothing here (so far) that helps me resolve this problem. I need this functionality for my business. I would truly appreciate your help. I understand that you are the expert in this thread. Thank you in advance.

You should review your OS crash logs for clues if that is the case. This thread contains almost no actionable data; no Adobe Crash reports to review,  and, with the lack of reproducible instructions, no replication by Adobe staff.

Not that it helps you, but offered as an additional data point, I am not crashing using Tether-capture on Mac 14.3. I have tested Canon 5D Mark VI and R5. I've also tried on two separate Macs and one Windows (10) machine.

Additionally, you could contact support for one-on-one help since none of those in this peer forum can seem to provide relief yet.

Hi Rikk,

Not quite accurate - I provided crash reports (with your guidance) against this (my registered email) for Sonoma 14.3 and subsequently 14.3.1.

I've only found a single crash report from you @davidc37375278  and it does not appear to be related to tether. If you've made multiple reports I've only located the one.

That's great to hear. We didn't have any fixes specific to tethering, so I guess the reinstall cleared it.

Updating to 13.2 resolved this for me as well. Reccomend others do the same

@Rikk Flohr: Photography

LrC 13.3.1 is unable to detect my Canon R5 (Firmware 2.0.0) in Macbook Pro M3 Pro with Sonoma 14.5. The connection is very erratic, most of the times, it is unable to detect the camera or takes a very long times to connect. Even when it is connected, it will lose the connection after a few shots.

I have tried with different tether cables and different ports, and they have the same outcome. However, with EOS Utility, it is able to detect the camera immediately, so it is not an issue with cables or ports. I have tried on my window laptop, and the connection between the camera and laptop is instant.

Been on the phones with Apple support, they have asked me to consult Adobe and Canon for the latest software updates. But I have already installed all the latest updates. Was on the phone with Adobe support earlier today and still unable to resolve the issue.

I am curious if someone is having the same tethering issue running Mac OS Sonoma 14.5 and Canon FW 2.0.0. Unfortunately, what i understand from Apple is that it is not possible to downgrade Mac OS.

Hello,

Same problem here… Sony IED Remote on Mac OS Sonoma 14.3.1 is working fine. Lightroom CC can see the RAWs, but can't import them and I've to force quit. Photoshop is working fine. Graphic Converter too… I've send a report.

Than's for your attention.

Eric

Hmm… Self answer...

I've selected the "today" folder in the right destination for LR CC and boom, LR import correctly my pictures.

As I'm a newbie in this kind of synchro I apologize if I've made some mistake.

And now, I've a lot of work !

Is the issue that you resolved related to LR CC crashing when you begin tethering?

Thanks,

Nat

Well… Choosing File > Tethered Capture > Start tethered capture in LR CC doesn't crash but nothing happens. I can't say the problem is with LR (or me), but I've found a solution for me. Ok, you need a Sony camera and more time…

Sorry if I'm not in the good thread.

Eric

Thanks, but somehow changing cameras doesn't seem like the solution. But I'm happy that it works for you.

Hello. I have the same issue and Adobe still could not help me after 1 hour of remote control. What a shame ! We are paying for a service we can't use

It's really frustrating. I saw a similar ticket for this issue was opened middle of last year and was resolved so I don't understand what has happened since then

I have exactly the same problem using an new M1 MacBook Air running a new install of Sonoma 14.3 with a new install of Lightroom Classic 13.1.

After entering Tethered Capture and specifying the file location I hit 'OK' - get a brief (1 second or less) 'Detecting Camera' popup before Lightroom crashes.

This occurs whether or not my camera (Canon R5) is connected to the USB port and whether or not it is switched on.

I have submitted crash reports (under this email) for this issue under both Sonoma 14.2.1 and (yesterday) after installing Sonoma 14.3.

In both cases no camera was connected. In the previous Intel world this would have resulted in the 'Detecting Camera' popup just continuing to search.
