Question

P: New AI-powered Lens Blur (Early Access) available across all surfaces.

This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

Please give the Refine tool a try. Expand the Refine collapsible widget in the lens blur UI to play with the focus/blur brush. Checkout Julieanne's nice tutorial video.

Tried to use this on a bird but it got some of the tail and the peak, couldn't work out how to exclude those parts?

So far so good. Very fun and use friendly, adds a very nice to touch to images and easy to use. Since it is new it is just a playful tool and I am looking forward to seeing how far it wll go.

Does this not work in camera raw through bridge? I see an option to try it, but it stays grayed out.

The workflow needs a tweak, I had the same problem.

Click "Apply" and the panel becomes active.

Computation of the depth map and lens blur is computationally expensive on every photo. "Apply" is an opt-in step for the customer to signal the intention.

It's great!

How can we access it? The dropdown panel is all grey.

Thanks Rikk, I just figured that out.

That's a weird workflow, normally settings are adjusted before "applying". I mean, how does one "apply" something they haven't done yet?

This needs a re-think.

Experimente a ferramenta Refinar. Expanda o widget recolhível Refinar na IU de desfoque de lente para brincar com o pincel de foco/desfoque. Confira o ótimo vídeo tutorial de Julieanne.

I am very disappointed. I have tried several times to use this feature and all I get is an error message. Also my catalogue seems to be all over the place. I don't know if this is related. I hope there's a major fix soon as it's affected my whole Lightroom experience.

Sorry about that. What is the actual error? Please check out and follow the pinned reply at the top tor resolve the GPU driver issues or follow the workaround.
