Problem: Images Being Duplicated On Export

Sigh. I'm not one to complain. Ever. But sadly, LR Classic isn't quite what I'd hoped. Various problems but two that are driving me mad:

  1. My workflow involves creating PSDs from NEF Raw files which are added to the catalog. If the PSD already exists, LR throws a prompt asking what to do - i.e. overwrite / skip / cancel / unique names. If I choose 'overwrite', it generates the PSD correctly but it then creates a duplicate entry in the catalogue for that PSD. So i now have TWO PSDs listed in the catalogue but both of those entries point to the SAME updated PSD. If I remove ONE of those entries, BOTH are removed which means I now have to re-import that PSD (again.) It looks a little like a Virtual Copy but isn't (and doesn't behave like one)
  2. Imports are taking an age - and they are happening behind the scenes.  This is a nightmare as not only does LR say it has finished the import (it clearly hasn't) but one by one each images is imported. Slowly. This isn't a huge headache except that each time a new file is imported, LR now jumps back up the catalogue to the location of the import essentially rendering it useless for anything else (it's hard to work when you can't switch folders because it keeps jumping around.) I KNOW I could just go and have a coffee but that isn't quite the point...

I'm working on Mac OSX 10.11.6 with a big catalogue (>500K assets) and up until this update everything has worked perfectly. It feels to me that, in an effort to improve the PERCEPTION of speed, things are now being done asynchronously behind the scenes - sadly, however, this may have worked for small / new catalogues but doesn't seem to work on a large, older one. The catalogue has also been optimized and it makes no difference.

Thank you for any help!

I have exactly these same two problems.   The double entry on export problem happens (seemingly randomly) with more than just psd exports (e.g., happens with jpg and tiff).   I have found that the entries are not identical.   One of them is such that (like the original post) deleting it deletes both.   But if instead you delete the other one, only the spurious entry is deleted.   I haven't found a way to identify in advance which is which, but most of the time the first of the two entries is the one to delete.

The other problem - slow import - is a big deal, especially if you export with "add to catalog" enabled.   The export happens reasonably fast, but the "add to catalog" part is extremely slow.   LR claims that the export is done, but the import of the exported files can take a very long time and there's no way to tell when it has really finished - the only way seems to be to count the imported files!    Many times I have exited LR not realizing that a slow import was still happening.   So next time I run LR, the catalog is incorrect.

These problem have existed since Classic was introduced - one would think that by now they would have solved the problem and issued an update.

    Grrrrr....

I know - it does feel like this wasn't tested very well or, if it was, they chose to ignore some pretty basic errors:

    1. duplicates are being created

    2. images being created and then added to the catalog are stupidly slow to be added - and they are added in a seemingly random order

    3. performance is slow on a big catalog

In a way I'm glad someone else is reporting it too as it just felt like it was me.

Come on Adobe please respond and fix what can only be described as schoolboy errors!

I've tested that workflow on both OSX (10.11.6) and Win10, and cannot reproduce the problem that you're reporting. On both platforms the "importing" keeps pace with the exporting, there is no lag, and when subsequently re-exporting using "Overwrite", duplicates are not created or added to the catalog. In short, everything seems to work as expected.

It would perhaps be helpful if you could setup a video capture of the problem to see if there's any step in your particular workflow that is different to the way I tested.
