Struggling to export HDR images to a Web Gallery in LR Classic 15.0

Hi all. I have developed images in LR Classic 15.0 and would like to share them with a few people. I'm aware they will need an HDR screen.

It works in both Safari and Chrome if I export as a RAF (Fuji RAW) but the detail is quite poor. Maybe it's using an embedded JPG preview of some sort? So I'm trying to export as another file type.

I've tried AVIF and JPG XL and with each file type I've checked the 'HDR Output' box in the export dialogue.

No joy. Nothing I try shows the HDR image using ether Safari or Chrome.

I saw some of Greg Benz stuff and tried ecpporting as DNG but that didn't work either.

Any ideas? I can do it using Google Photos but it isn't nearly as nice an interface so I'd like to stick to Lightroom Web Gallery if I possibly can.

Thanks in advance.

So you basically reimport the images into Lightroom cloudy by putting them into an album (which imports them and uploads to the cloud) and share that gallery? You're taking far too many steps but my guess is that you have not enabled the import option to automatically enable hdr for images that are hdr capable. The default is to turn it off which by default strips the hdr from images that can be hdr like avif and jxl. Just check in the develop area in Lightroom cloudy and make sure the hdr button is enabled. This doesn't happen to the dng since that is actually a raw image with associated develop settings that will override this preference. I don't know why Adobe by default disables the hdr on imported non-raw images but they do. Just change the setting and you should be good. For already imported images just hit the hdr button and it should sync and update in the web gallery.

So, I've done a set of exports and tested them in Safari (26.0.1), Chrome (142.0.7444.60) and also Quick Look on the Mac.

Here are the results:

'Open File' in Safari shows the AVIF and JPG images correctly but not the JPG XL nor the DNG

'Open File' in Chrome shows them all correctly except for the DNG

Quick Look on Mac shows the AVIF and JPG correctly but not the JPG XL. The DNG loads but shows a full, unedited image

Opening the Adobe Gallery online in Chrome, only the DNG shows correctly

Opening the Adobe Gallery online in Safari, only the DNG shows correctly

So, even thought the two browsers are recognising the HDR images, once they are in Adobe's Gallery, they are no longer recognised as HDR.

I used Lightroom CC to create an Album from my local files and then did an 'Ibvite and Share' to get a shareable link to the Album.

Here is the link to the album - https://lightroom.adobe.com/shares/938177760d30453e8d656cdfbb0a1b9f

Regarding the detail level, I've attached a screenshot showing the maximum zoom level for Lightroom Web Gallery and Zonerama which hopefully shows the much better zoom available in Zonerama.

YES!! That was the answer. I re-imported them after enabling the HDR Edit option and now they all show as HDR.

Thank you so much!

Ok, I just couldn't get this to work so instead, I found Zonerama which works well, can disable downloads and shows HDR images correctly. I'll revisit Adobe Web Gallery in the future but for now I give up

What specifically do you mean by "Adobe Web Gallery"?

Do you mean you go into LrC's Web module and export a gallery? Or do you use the sync feature and then share pictures from there? Or some other method?

Yes, I just don't understand why it doesn't work. As I said in my first post, if I simply add Fuji RAF files to a collection, they do show as HDR but the level of detail is quite low.

I've exported in AVIF and JPG XL with both Rec 709 and Rec 2020 colour spaces and, although the images preview correctly on my Mac as HDR images, once they're uploaded to Adobe, they do not.

I'm on the latest version of LR Classic, LR and 26.0.1 on my Mac.

I'm going to upload all version of an image again and I'll share the public link here shortly.

The max resolution of the web galleries is 2560 pixels on the long edge. That should be more than enough for any web use. How does the low resolution manifest itself for you? Indeed share a link so we can see.

when you export to avif or jxl, how does you 'upload to Adobe' ?

I am very confused by this post. HDR works perfectly fine from Classic on Lightroom Web gallery if you simply set a collection of HDR images to sync and share that gallery. So DO NOT export. Simply set a collection to sync and make it public and you're set. Note that this will only work correctly in Chrome. Safari gained a small amount of HDR support in the latest operating system but it is very hit and miss and almost never actually works. You will also only see the HDR in Lightroom web galleries if you click on an image to enlarge it also.

Here is an example of a quick gallery I did that to: https://lightroom.adobe.com/shares/cd71fe426d7a45c28ae667ebc2b14c6b It is simply a synced collection straight from the raw images in Classic to the cloud. Again, only works in Chrome and you need to click the images to see the HDR.

@Jao vdL , you indicate there are problems using Safari, is there any problem with Microsoft Edge?

Using the Export option in LrC to share a RAW file you would have to select "export original" so what you get is a copy of your original raw file (without any edits you may have applied in LrC).

If your client or friend has access to LrC 15.0 you can explore using "Export as a Catalog and include the Original files. Send the Catalog to them.

Thanks, but these are edited images from a holiday I recently went on, to be shared with other holiday-makers who were with us. They won't have access to anything more than Chrome and maybe an HDR screen or phone

I would simply create a Collection in LrC and sync to Adobe Creative Cloud that will Sync Smart Previews to the Adobe Cloud Storage and you can share with them from there. They can view and there is also an option for them to download copies from there is the wish.

Alternatively you can export higher resolution images from LrC, tiff, jpeg or jpeg xl. Aand share those online so they can copy or download.
