Question

trouble with tracklogs in map module

Hi, I've recently started taking photos while hiking again and I'm having quite a lot of trouble with the map module.  When I load my tracklog, select all photos from the hike, and choose "auto-tag", zero to at most 1-2 are tagged.  The vast majority are not.  I have confirmed this is not a time-zone issue.  Photos taken with Lr Mobile app on iPhone, gps tracklog recorded with garmin epix 2 watch (latest gen).

I'm fine manually fixing GPS locations, but when I've got the tracklog loaded, dropping a photo onto the correct spot is unusably slow.  That shouldn't be the case with my system specs (M1 Max, 64GB).  If I disable the tracklog then it's back to being instantaneous, but then I don't know where to drop the images onto the map.

Here's a dropbox link with example DNGs and a GPX tracklog.

Thanks for any help!

And here's my system info:

I love that route from Italy Pass through Granite Park down to Pine Creek.  Hiked and skied in that area many times. But I've only gone down to Pine Creek, not up. Pretty impressive -- you did 20 miles and 5000' up / 5000' down in 10 hours!

Well, I live in the mountains of Colorado and have no issue with my Iphone recording GPS.  The phone does NOT need cell service to record GPS.

Your DNGs you posted have GPS coordinates in them.  Are these DNGs the originals from LrMobile or are these from Lightroom.  I am not sure if Lightroom Classic will automatically adjust photos to a track if the photos already have GPS coordinates.

Bob, I'm intimately familiar with using phone GPS in the wilderness.  Phone GPS is not the issue.  Stating "you shouldn't have to use a tracklog" and then following up with guesses ("I am not sure if [...]") is not constructive and reduces the signal-to-noise ratio of this bug report.  I'd like to hear from others who have more certainty regarding the specific Lightroom Classic malfunctions that I've documented and for which I've provided video evidence.

Of course, I remain open to the possibility of user error if anyone has more concrete and certain information.

In the meantime I'll continue posting examples as I cantinue to hike and take pictures.  Thank you!

I tried your photos and track.  As I suspected, the photos already have GPS coordinates so they are already placed on the map in LrC and LrC won't relocate them.  You have to select all the photos and use the menu Photos/Delete GPS coordinates.  Then you can AutoTag the photos with the track.

Bob, in the High Sierra where there is no cell service GPS takes 20-30 seconds to get a lock.  I don't wait around for GPS before taking a picture.  I snap and go and wish to rely on my tracklog.  Plus, there is no reason a tracklog wouldn't work for pictures with existing gps data.

Your Iphone using the Lightroom Mobile App camera should have the GPS coordinate included so you shouldnt have to use a tracklog.

I also added a short screen recording of my experience with using the tracklog.  Admittedly, this is after tediously manually fixing most of the locations of the photos, but you still get the idea: auto-tag doesn't work, and manually dropping a photo onto a track is unusably slow.  Thank you!
