P: (Masking) - Sync on faces, not person numbers

Explorer ,
Dec 14, 2023 Dec 14, 2023

Hello,

TLDR: I wish the Ai was more clever when syncing subject masks, syncing faces rather than 'Person numbers'

While editing I often create Ai subject masks for one or two people in an image. Let's say it's the bride & groom walking down the aisle for example... I've then got a big sequence of these images that I would like to sync.  But when you sync, the Ai more often than not decides to choose 2 random people sitting off to the side, instead of the first image where I've selected the bride & groom.

Looking into it deeper, it seems it always syncs the 'person number(s)' rather than the actual intended target. So after correcting the mask to the correct people - some shots of the bride & groom could be labelled differently... 'Person 2 & Person 3' while the next shot could be 'Person 3 & Person 4' or if it's getting it really wrong 'Person 5 & Person 6' ....even though the shot is only marginally different from the first.

It would be good if there was some rhyme or reason to it, but it seems it's just random as to how Adobe and the Ai software are numbering each 'Person' in the shot. It then takes a great deal of time to delete the incorrect mask and reselect the correct person every time for each shot.

It already recognizes each face, why can't it sync on the face rather than the person numbering system? There's probably a reason but would be a brilliant improvement and a massive time saver!  I surely can't be the only one.

Thanks for listening.

Cheers.

When syncing AI masking, specifically people masks, to another photo, the mask syncs to the wrong person 90% of the time. When I look at the naming on the mask, it correctly identifies which person the mask should be applied to, but it always gets put on the leftmost person instead. I then have to go in and delete the "sub-masks" and reassign the edit to the proper people for each and every image synced. Imagine doing this for 30-50 images in a row. Even turning on auto-sync does not help. This has been a problem for months at this point.

Happy to provide whichever system/program information necessary, but I already discussed this with Adobe customer support and they don't think it has anything to do with my hardware.

"when syncing subject masks"

Are you referring to Subject masks or People masks? You might check out these two threads for others with issues with syncing/copying People masks:

I'm having this issue as well. It's beyond frustrating as the whole point of syncing masks is to reduce time. It works well when it's just one person, but if I have multiple people with masks, it's syncing all of those masks onto one person. I have to go through and delete most and then redo the mask.

Hi team,

This is my first time posting here and it's because I haven't found a solution to my problem in syncing masks to other photos in lightroom classic. So I edit my photos, as usual and I use mask to apply specific adjustments to the persons in the photos. However, when I try to sync the adjustments to the rest of the photos all are sync except for the masks. For example, I have applied masks to 4 people in the picture and sync it to another photo with the same people in the same order, but only the person on the far left is getting the mask adjustment. Please help.

How are you doing this, step by step. Screenshots may help

Hi GoldingD,

I'm actually adjusting the parameters (exposure, color grading, curves, calibration, details, & masking) in one photo first. Then I look for similar shots with similar persons (e.g. 4 people in a row). I select them all and click sync and choose all the parameters that I want to be applied to the rest of the photos including the mask. But when I check, the rest of the photos its always the person on the left only gets the masking effect. I can share screenshots here.

There was somebody else with this issue on the forum. I think this is a bug but also perhaps a limitation of the system. The system only recognizes that there are people, not which people. That said it should be able to do what you want with masks for person 2 synced to person2 in the next image. That sounds like a simple thing.

Hi Jao,

Yes, I've read that issue here before, but after following all recommendations it didn't change anything. I also forgot to add that I tried using a different laptop and it didn't have that issue except for a few photos where some persons where not in focus, but masking was applied to the rest of the photos with the persons. Both LR CC in both laptops are updated.

I've been bitching about this for months now. Adobe doesn't even acknowledge the problem exist. I've tried different things like only checking the masks I want to apply to a specific person but the masks are still applied to the first person. I've tried unchecking all masks and rechecking the boxes, it worked once not again.

All this new Ai gen tech - yet we still can't batch sync 'people' masks without it selecting the wrong people!! 🤦‍:male_sign:

Come on Adobe - any updates on this?... AI facial recognition exists - build it into the masking feature please 🙏
