P: Support cataloging PSB files

Lightroom should catalog psb files, just as it does psd files. I have many psb files that are not over the 65,000 pixels per side or 512 megapixel limits, but are larger than the 4GB limit on psd files, and it would be nice to see them in Lightroom.

Updates to Lightroom Classic, were released yesterday and contain initial support for PSB files.   Please install the appropriate update. You can read more about the updates here.

Note: Lightroom pixel-dimension maximums (65,000 Pixels long edge or 512 MP - whichever comes first) continue to be a limitation but the team is looking into expanding this range in a future enhancement for the PSB file support.

Thank you for your patience.

This would be my request too. I've just been working on a poster which comprises several high quality images of people to appear as if they were all present for one photo. I was working in PSD and it just outgrew the filesize limit and became PSB. Suddenly I have to go outside of Lightroom just to open the file because it's not listed... but it's still part of the Lightroom workflow for me.

You might be able to get by using TIFFs.  PSDs have a maximum size of 2 GB, while TIFFs can go to 4 GB.   Once you go over 4 GBs, you need to use PSBs.

That would be a nice place to start! As long as we can see it and open in Photoshop, that would be great.

Just started creating Pano and exposure blending with my D800 raw files. Linking the smart objects back to the Raw file in Photoshop. The file is greater than 4GB, I can not manage this file as part of my Lightroom workflow as I need to use PSB files. Just need Lightroom to support PSB catalogue and allow edit in Photoshop (original).

"Just need Lightroom to support PSB catalogue and allow edit in Photoshop (original)."

See the Any File plugin, which was designed for this use case.  Not nearly as convenient as having it built-in to LR, but it gets the job done.

Thanks for the hint John!

But that'll be actually pretty useful from Lightroom to be able to manage the PSB as the PSD and TIFF files in terms of previewing the file itself and even edit it as an actual built-in supported file 🙂

That is a little below the belt John; trying to sell plug-ins at the expense of supporting Adobe fixing Lightroom. PSB is an Adobe file format hence it is not unreasonable to ask for Lightroom to support it.

I very much want LR to be a more capable digital asset manager in general, and to handle PSB files in particular.  (I was the 16th out of 55 to me-too this topic.)  As I mentioned, the plug-in is not nearly as useful as having the capability built-in, and I would greatly prefer it if Adobe added this capability.

But meanwhile, many people need to get work done while waiting for Adobe to fix things, and they come to this forum looking for solutions.

This feature is long overdue with rising file sizes of modern DSLRs. Adobe wake up and start working. I keep coming back to this thread once in a year just to see that nothing changed. What are we paying the monthly bills for...
My panoramas with the D810 and a tele lens end up being 10GB plus in size. I want to catalogue them to find them in my big library and folder structure. Edits can always be made in Photoshop if need be.

For those of you interested in another workaround: I create a TIFF file with the same dimensions as the original file (works most of the time). It is set to sRGB and 8 Bit contrary to the original file which is 16bit and ProPhotoRGB. This alone saves a lot of space. Then I link the original file as a smart object. So it is rendered inside the file and you can always jump from the TIFF file to the original via the smart object.
The TIFF can then be imported to LR. No plugin needed.

Could it be possible for future versions of Lightroom to include the facility for reading .psb files as I work with large 360 degrees panoramas, that are created with layers for easy editing of minor errors

Tweeted to @AdobeCare and they directed me to make a request here.  I see that the thread started  6 years ago and the requests keep coming for this feature.  Remind me again why we're paying monthly, year after year, for software that doesn't support it's own file formats?  Very disappointing to say the least.

I really can't believe this is still absent from Lightroom. My file sizes are only getting bigger, now I'm spending my time trying to haggle with Lightroom, "If I merge these layers will you please be under 4gb?"....weight 5 minutes for it to save a compressed zip format to cut further down on the size.... nope "Ok, I guess I can delete those layers..." repeat

Now 6 years and 73 "me too"s. Come on, Adobe!

I want to remind everyone of two solutions that you should consider—purchasing the AnyFile plugin, or using Helmut Steiner's smart object solution above. If you use AnyFile on Macintosh, it is pretty straightforward to assign command-key shortcuts to its menu commands, which I have done.
