P: Camera-matching profiles are not correctly detected in Ricoh cameras

Hello everyone. I have been using Lightroom Classic for a brief time, much to my enjoyment. What has been a very big plus is that LrC has always imported DNG files with the in-camera presets attached to them, so I can edit the DNG file with my camera settings, i.e. film simulation, already embedded.

All of a sudden LrC and Lr show me the DNG files as if I had only been shooting raw, not raw+jpeg. It does not matter what settings I try fiddling with and I have been unable to find any answers online. I could find a setting in Lr for embedding the camera settings to the raw-file, and a similar setting in LrC, but it doesn't work even with the setting on.

This used to be how the program worked by default but now it's gone. And this issue means I would have to edit the jpegs for printing, so this is quite a big problem for me.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

The Camera Raw team has an open bug for this and is planning to fix the Ricoh problem in an upcoming release.

Happy to hear you've enjoyed Lightroom Classic and Lightroom. They are both extremely helpful for asset management and editing all in one program. Let's try to figure out what is going on.

Can I ask you to answer a few troubleshooting questions first:

  1. Can you share what camera you're using and a sample file with a preset embedded?
  2. What version of LrC and Lr are you currently using, and in which version was this not an issue?

Hi there!

 

1) I am currently using a Ricoh GRIIIx, shooting in DNG+JPEG. The camera pops out two files (one for each) but hitherto I have been able to open the DNG alone in Lr and LrC and it will appear in the style of the JPEG. So I attach two sample files, one of each.

 

2) I am currently using 13.4 of LrC and 7.4.1 of Lr, the same versions I started with (I just got the programs a few months ago). So this wasn't an issue until very recently, but I don't know what happened to change this.

 

Hopefully we can find a way to sort it out.

ps. the interface gives me an error messge concerning the DNG file, so I tried to include an extra set of images. The same happened again; the DNG file is not permitted.

The symptoms sound like you have either disabled the "Camera Settings" option in the Raw Defaults section or have changed to using a conflicting preset at import. 

In Classic, the settings are found in Preferences>Presets - Raw Defaults. Make sure Global is set to "Camera Settings". 

In Desktop, the settings are found in Preferences>Import. Set Raw Default to "Camera Settings"

Thank you for this. I looked for these settings and they are all set to how you describe them. Some screenshots attached to my reply, showing raw defaults, import settings, and other relevant things.

 

I then imported three DNGs and as you can see their previews match my camera settings but the histogram is mysteriously in color, and as I move one image to Develop it turns to color, as you can see on the screenshots.

 

So maybe I accidentally tripped some other setting?

Here is a link with a couple of paired jpegs and dngs. I notice that as soon as the files are in the dropbox, the dngs no longer have the same preview image as on my computer or in LrC.
