Latest beta 26.10 is once again hijacking the default application choice in MacOS

This problem croppped up last year, it has arisen anew.

Behavior: With the beta (26.10) and release versions (26.9.0) installed, the default app for psds, psbs, and other file types previously asscoiated with the release version become associated with the beta by default.

Going to the get info panel on a document of this type and switching default app to the release version does not work, the default is switched back to the beta.

Going to the "Full Disk Access" option under the system setting Privacy and Security reveals that the Beta has replaced the release version in the list. Attempting to add the release version to the list only reconfirms the beta.

Workaround: Un-installing the beta.

After the beta is uninstalled it still appears on the Full Disk Access list. However if you click on it, the name instantly changes back to the release version.

Obvioulsy the OS can no longer distinuish between the the beta and release. Since I updated both simultaneously I cannot tell which new app version is causing the behavior.

Hi @robertw44482386 testing here and we do not see this.  When we double click on a .psd file, it opens in the release version of Photoshop.  We are not sure what you reference as psds or psbs files, could you explain?

1. Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ Photoshop Beta Settings (Mac Ventura)
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)\Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings

Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut
With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.

2. It may help if we could see your Photoshop beta System Info. Launch Photoshop beta, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thanks,

LATEST

I have never voluntarily opened Beta.

I've turned off automatic updates for Beta in the CC app.
I've uninstalled Beta a few times (just uninstalled again, so we'll see if it sticks), and it keeps reinstalling and updating automatically.
This has happened on my previous Macbook (2019 Intel Max) and my most recent (2023 M3 Max).
I have reset the main Photoshop app (whatever the current version is at the time) to the default app for TIF and PSD several times.

It continues to go rogue and change to Beta.

It loves to do this when I've gone to open up several files at once.

And now it won't even let me select Photoshop '25. Just Illustrator or Acrobat. Cool.

Neither posting my system info nor resetting preferences would help as I have uninstalled the beta.

Can you tell me if the behavior I am seeing in the Full Disk Access Panel is the same as what you are seeing? I can't get more than one version of Photoshop to show up in that list, even if I have multiple versions installed.

Hi @robertw44482386 it is still worth it to share your Ps release version sysinfo, even if you have Ps Beta uninstalled as we can see if something is going on in your overall setup.

Thanks,

Hi,

The Full Disk Access list may not show all installed applications.

List of all installed versions (many older versions are left for some reason)

Applications that appear in Full Disk Access

This is normal and has nothing to do with the version of the application being used.

Use "Get Info" to associate file extensions with the version of the application that opens them.
For example, if you associate "Photoshop 2025" with ".psd", "Photoshop 2025" will become the default application, and if you associate "Photoshop Beta", "Photoshop Beta" will also become the default application.

If this is not the case, it means there is a problem with your macOS.
You may want to try it with a new user, or you may need to reinstall macOS.

As I mentioned, I did all the things you suggested with the Get Info window. Beta simply takes over.

In any case, it was not apparently not an OS issue at all because updating the Beta to the latest version fixed it. Just as updating it to the latest version before broke it.
