You could be running into a memory issue. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to see whether RAM is maxed out. If that's okay, try opening the file directly into Camera Raw from Bridge (Ctrl+R). That will tell you if the problem is with Camera Raw itself, in which case you can download and install it directly.

It could also be a problem with settings. A standard troubleshooting step is to reset Photoshop settings when the program shows weird behavior.

What's the exact error message?

What do you do before the error occur?

Please also provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

I'm having the same issue with the 17.0.1 update, and this fix isn't working.  Raw won't open as a plugin or standalone, and isn't even allowing me to open the preferences.  I assume that it's a fault with the update?

Today whilst using Photoshop the ability to open RAW files (Nikon NEF) suddenly stopped and I get the message "could not complete your request because of a program error"

I get this message if I try and open a NEF file, if I click on the menu "Filter" "Camera Raw filter" I also get the message if I go into preference and try and reset the RAW preferences by holding down ctrl and clicking the button Camera Raw Preferences.

I have uninstalled and re-installed Photoshop but it hasn't fixed the problem, I have also checked for updates via Creative Cloud.

It's strange that it was working fine and I was able to open RAW files, edit and save and then suddenly this stopped working, it's as if Camera Raw has been corrupted but I can't find a solution.

So I'm looking for help on this one

Hi folks.

I took 3 photos in RAW last night and have just tried to edit them but keep getting the message in the title.Never had any troubles like this before.Is this a bug in the recent update to Camera Raw.I,m using Photoshop v26.0

Camera Raw V17.01.

This has only appeared since the latest Camera Raw update 4 days ago.Thankyou in advance for any help/fixes to this problem.Seem to be able to open JPEGS ok.

Hello, since this morning my Adobe Photoshop won't open photos anymore due to program error but I can't find where it comes from. Does anyone have any tips?

What type of file, how are you opening.

I've had this since 25.11 and up, not before. It happens when PS has been running for a while, not immediately when opening.

I'm pretty sure this is a bona fide bug and someone shoul collect these threads and merge them. There's been a few. The rather curious observation I've made so far, is that it only seems to happen to users outside the English language zone. Yeah, I know 😉

Oh, and resetting ACR (or PS) preferences doesn't do anything.

I'll try to watch this and direct new cases here.

Here's the problem description:

• When Photoshop is freshly launched, everything works as it should.
• After a while, exact timing seems to vary, a few minutes to a half hour, ACR will no longer open, and you get the error message shown in the OP here.
• This started in Photoshop 25.11. Version 25.9 and earlier are unaffected by this.
• This affects both the ACR raw processor and the ACR Filter in Photoshop.
• When the ACR filter is called by an action, without calling the interface, it seems to work normally.
• Edit in Photoshop from Lightroom Classic, also not calling the interface, works normally.

I've never installed any beta so I don't know.

But I do believe the actual problem is in Photoshop, not ACR, since version 25.9 still works perfectly (I still have it installed). It's only version 25.11 and later.

Photoshop Beta is for finding and reporting bugs so the developers can fix them before they go to the released version. If it's working there, one possibility is that they have found a fix that will be in an upcoming release.

Buona sera mi chiamo Guido Drago, è successo esattamente così anche a me, ho lavorato per circa un mese senza problemi, poi improvisamente Photoshop apre solo file PSD, non NEF e nemmeno JPEG. L'idea che mi sono fatto e che non carichi correttamente Camera RAW. Ho provato anche con Camera Raw 16 e 16.5 ma da lo stesso problema. Ho disinstallato Photoshop e reinstallato, poi ho rimesso Camera Raw 17 ha funzionato per quanche ora e poi dopo aver spento il pc e riacceso non ha piu funzionato.
